Because your mom is already married. Adultery is still illegal under some state's laws.

Well, it was probably initially made illegal BECAUSE it is immoral.

Remember that in many states, sodomy (anal sex) either is or was illegal, simply because the folks writing the laws believed that it was immoral. As morals change, those laws are being stricken from the books in most places.

However, with regards to incest, there is an additional, biogenetic reason to keep it illegal: The likely mental and physical handicaps that result in the offspring when individuals with essentially the same genetic make-up breed.

partially because, in many instances of incest, one partner is not of legal age to consent or to even consider a sexual relationship. Secondly, because morals are often an indvidual choice, the gov't. feels it must step in and make certain decisions for us. In many instances, there will be both a pro and con for the issue..gay rights, abortion, etc...that make gov't. intervention a controversial thing. In the case of incest, I am not sure why any person would feel the need to disagree with the laws, but I can only assume that the overwhelming sense of outrage and the long term genetic affects of an incestuous relationship have allowed the laws to be passed with little conflict from the general population.

For the record, I totally support laws against incest. It is one thing I simply can not understand.

First off, incest is a crime because it is so closely related to abuse, abuse of power. It is also illegal because of sexual deformity. Had incest been acceptable to mankind over the centuries (not thank goodness!) evolution would have had us all having several ears anfd no eyes, 20 arms or something like the worst monster you can imagine. So for our survival as a species, we have intuitively known it is not a great idea.

The rist of genetic abnormalities in resulting children increases. Governments don't want to pay for their care. Incest was known to cause this in pre-history time, and it has been a banned practice even before there were governments much larger than just a village elder 40,000 years ago

Because society passed laws to put people who commit incest in jail - probably because they found it so unacceptable - they don't want those people out in society.
