While the Finger of Friendship is practiced by all Pastifarian groups today, a few alternative gestures have been practiced in various historical periods by diverse and localized groups. Among these are:
1. Holy Sprinkling. The hand is raised as though grasping a shaker of grated Parmesan and moved up and down. The meaning of the gesture is believed to convey the generosity of and gratitude to the FSM, whose abundance transcends the daily basic needs of pasta, sauce and meatballs.
2. Sacred Spiral. The hand is held at the level of the stomach and a twirling motion is made, as though winding spaghetti onto a fork. It is acceptable to make this gesture just before receiving the plate with the holy meal in anticipation of partaking in gastronomic unity and fellowship.
3. Dabbing. Two fingers are raised, touching the corners of the mouth, left side first, then right, as though removing traces of sauce with a napkin. [Some remote groups have reversed the order of the sacred dabbing for reasons that have been lost. through time.] The meaning of the gesture is thought to convey humility and meekness, so as to cause neither envy nor offense, upon the discovery of traces of the holy meal upon the adherent's face.
