Most couples send out "save the dates" when the wedding is on or around a holiday or on an "odd" day, perhaps on a weekday rather than a weekend! So, to give people time to plan ahead, it's customary to send out the cards about 7 to 9 months in advance. However, if you're just sending them to make the announcement, you can send them a bit closer to the actual date... usually 4 or 5 months in advance! (Any later, and you run into the invitations themselves!)

Since Save the Date cards are used as a preliminary invitation to your wedding, they should be sent at least 4 months before the wedding, which is about 2 months before your wedding invitations will be in the mail. Save the Dates are not necessary, but are especially important if many of your friends and family will have to travel to your wedding location or if your wedding date falls on or around any holidays. You may want to consider sending them out even earlier, especially if your wedding is taking place at a popular destination or vacation spot.

Save the Dates allow your guests to have plenty of time to request work off, arrange hotel and/or airfare, arrange for babysitters etc. so that your wedding will be a celebrated event and possible vacation that they will share with you. Your guests will appreciate the advance notice of a Save the Date and will have the memories to keep for a lifetime.

You can send them out any time that you would like, really. If your wedding is in a popular tourist location or it's during peak season (such as peak foliage season in the North East), I would recommend sending the Save the Date's as soon as they are available. Then you can send along accomodation information as well.

I've only received 2 save the dates... one was sent about 9 months before the wedding (sent in Feb for a Nov wedding) and the other was sent via Email through www.TheKnot.com and it was about 2 months before the wedding.

As soon as you set your date, or if it is an extended engagement, 6 months prior to the event.

In any situation, it is best to call each person (or family/couple) when you set your date - just to let them know and to say hello. So many brides don't see or speak to people for months or years and then drop an announcement/save the date/invitation in the mail. Phone contact helps get your correct headcount early.

If you have a large number of out of town guests, it would be wise to send them even earlier so they can make plans. Many working people have to ask for their vacation time months in advance, if not at the beginning of their business plan year.

Between 3 months and 12 months out, any time in there is fine.

But make SURE your invitee list is firmed up before sending them! You cannot remove someone from the invitee list after sending them a save the date!

I have met brides who later wanted to change their plans, or change their venue, or suddenly want a smaller wedding, but they had painted themselves into a corner by sending out 100s of save the dates.

Look at your guests--are they going to have to be getting plane tickets? Is your wedding date during the summer or on a holiday? Take all of these into consideration.

Pick anywhere between 6 and 9 months. It gives the people enough time to request work off, get an airplane ticket, and consider options for hotels.

Don't listen to those who say it's tacky to do it this way or that way. You have to look at your guests and decide what's best for you and for them.

We had guests flying in from all over the world, so leaving them just a few weeks wouldn't have been fair.

6-8 months before the wedding.

I would send them out about 1 year in advance. This way they can put it on there calendars. Most people don't send out those cards though, if you don't want to!

You send out the invitations around 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding. I have saved all of my rsvp cards.
