You can't see it but there is a little person inside the grill that waits until the meat is done and he turns it off. Watch for him next time he is real small with a green hat on his head.

Temperature overload. Done food gives off less water and the grill gets too hot
Either that or a timer

Maybe it's because mine is an older model, but it doesn't shut off automatically.

It has a smelling device and when the kitchen smells all greasy it shuts off!
