A friend of mine had all their Jpeg files get converted to a VBScript file and they dont know why. Their husband re-installed a piece of software and they dont know why it has converted all their JPEG files to VBScript Files.

Before the reinstillation everything was well with the files.

After the incident they saved new JPEG files to the Pc, swithced the PC off and then upon turning the PC back on the new files also converted to VBScript files.

Have they got a virus do you think?
Can they recover their Jpeg files?

Mostly they got a virus.
If they'll install an antivirus and find the virus probably the antivirus can clean up the files.
Good luck and in the future tell them to back up important pictures.

I am confused how the information in a jpeg file could be converted into a VBScript. The two types of files do not contain the same find of information. I could be convinced that the file extension has changed. Have they tried renaming the pictures to jpq again and see it they will copen?

It is also posible that somehow the jpg extension has become associated with the VBScript program. Have they tried opening their graphic program and then opening a picture in the program? If they can do that, then all they have to do is reassign the jpg extension to their graphic program.

You do that by right clicking on any jpg file, and selecting "Open with..." Select the program they want to use to open jpg files and then check the box at the botton of the window that says "Always use this program to open this kind of file" (or similar working - varies with versions of Window). That should let them open jpg files again.

Use a program such as ACDSee to convert one image file format to another. Good thing about using such a program is that you can set the compression level too, so if you don't want any loss in quality when converting from BMP to JPG, then you can do that, but if you want a really small JPG file size, then you can sacrifice quality by setting the compression level. Photoshop will also do that for you, if you have that. Note: You could open the BMP using Microsoft Paint, then simple save as a JPG, but you would get considerable loss of quality! So don't go for this method. Worst way of converting a BMP to a JPG.

What ever program they installed is associating jpeg(pictures) with vbscript...you need to rightclick on the jpeg photos click change then associate them with a program that looks at pictures...
Or, reinstall the program that did this to begin with and look closely at what it's doing (associations etc) before just clicking the express install and letting it have free will to do as it pleases...
