My partner and I have a little debate over the smell of cooking in our house. We have an open plan kitchen and lounge and hate it when the smell of food is in our house. My partner thinks its best to close the door to keep the smell in, however i think that this 'traps' the smell into a concentrated area and think we should leave the door open to disperse the smell throughout the house making it less evident and quicker to disappear. What do you think we should do?

open a door, and put a fan by the door, to blow it out. I dont like the smell either. Opened windows and doors with fans going, works for me.

It really all depends on where your air intake for your furnace is. Personally, I would keep the door closed and turn on the exhaust fan over the stove and let it suck the smells out. However, if the intake to your filter is in (or near) that room, it's going to suck in the onion/garlic/frying/cooking smell and blow it through the entire house anyway, so it's irrelevant. Whatever you do, keep the bedroom doors closed so your clothes won't smell like food!

Keep the bathroom and bedroom doors closed and use a fan to let the smell out by the kitchen if you can or by a window in your living room.

I think you should install some sort of ventilating appliance like a cooker hood or extractor fan. Failing this, shut the kitchen door but open the kitchen window. Light a scented candle might help (but be careful with raw flame).

My self personally would leave the door open, but I would also have a small window open to help circulate the smell and fresh air faster
