The hebrew shows it to be "not allow a poisoner to live"... there was no word for witch till, I think it was, the early 1400's from an old english word, wicca (yes, that is an old english word) and it's pronounced witcha... and meant male witch (basically... sorcerer). wicce was female... pronounced witcheh. King James was paranoid that witches were out to get him... he even wrote a book about it and demonology, so he forced the issue concerning these things.

That is a PURPOSEFUL mistranslation made by King James. The original version stated "Thou shalt not suffer a POISONER to live" (which is akin to saying 'an eye for an eye'), but it got mistranslated for political purposes.

Modern Christians would probably kill witches if they could--but it's illegal.

many of the christians would, if they had their way.

honestly in my opinion the old testament laws against metaphysical things, originally had an implication of being against those who use these things for evil. not just ANY use. because honestly that doesn't make sense, as god gives people authority and power in ways that could be called that.

edit: also I think the proper jewish translation was "caster of hexes" which supports my view that it INTENDED to be a specific ruling against negative use of magic and such.

Same reason that a modern woman who hears voices in her head telling her to kill her children goes to jail. Go figure...

Prison time. We call that sort of thing a 'hate crime' these days. This is now the 21rst century, not the 14th.
