No just casually go up to hi and ask if he's going. then ask if he has a date, then ask if he'd like to go together with you

Just ask him in passing, without making a big deal about it...the worst he can say is no and you would be no worse off then not asking him at all. You might be surprised when he says yes.

Start off w/ regular conversation, and then ask if he's going w/ anyone to the dance? Then, ask him, " would you like to go w/ me?" the worst thing he can say is no...
