Hello, I am attending a wedding at 6:30 in the evening, but it is at the home of the bride and groom. Any suggestions on appropriate attire? I know evening weddings are usually formal, but this is at a home, would a cocktail dress work? Thanks!

Color is very important! Wearing black to a wedding ceremony is OK, but remember, in our American culture, black is the traditional color of mourning. Weddings are happy occasions! I would wear a color other than black to the wedding ceremony.

I, personally, think that red is too loud of a color to wear to a wedding,Red is an attention-getting color and should only be worn when attention should be paid to the wearer. Clothes that are worn in places of worship, where most wedding ceremonies are held, should be modest, out of respect for the institution. In other words, don’t wear a low cut, thigh high, skin-tight dress to the place where the wedding takes place. This should help for what time/day it is and the formallity of it:

Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit (business attire OK for morning weddings)

Informal Evening: Cocktail dress

Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit

Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress

Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional.

Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap)

Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz (furs, diamonds, etc.)

Do's and Dont's!!!!!

Don't wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.

Don't wear black or sequins during the daytime.

Don't worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can't possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.

Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn't belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it's appropriate, it probably isn't.

Don't wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.

Do take off gloves to eat or drink.

Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.

Hope this helped and have a great time!!!

A cocktail dress would be fine for a wedding at home... Most likely the bride and groom will be so busy they won't even notice what you are wearing!

well it depends on the couple and their families, but in this day and age, more and more people are starting to dress "clubbing" attire as either party or any occasion attire! therefore, a little cocktail dress can substitute for ANY occasion, nice dinner, wedding, night out on the town, etc. before i think it was more appropriate to care for the color and the dress type, but now the rules are kinda lax. just remember not to wear an all white dress!!! :)

Depends on how much a person spent on their wedding tells you how to dress, but since it at someone home maybe wearing a cocktail dress is too much but if the have a nice I mean a really nice house maybe yes or if you want every body to see how good you look i Say Go for it !

cocktail dress no. A sophisticated dress sure. try to stay away from white though. Go with other colors. Sense its fall and it is in the home of the bride and groom. Go with something comfortable yet not too casual.

If it is supposed to be formal you can tell by the invitation stating Black Tie, or by the invitation being engraved, white or ecru stock, with little or no ornamentation. Those are the most formal invitations.

Black tie requires a long gown, not a cocktail dress. But if they have not specified black tie then your cocktail dress should be great.

Your dress should not be white, black, OR red.

did the invite say "black tie" or "formal"? if not then i would assume that it was a more casual wedding and most likely very small...i would go for the cocktail dress.

A dress is fine, a pant suite is fine too. If you are a guest, then I go by the rule "If I would wear it to work, I can wear it here" which means business casual, but not 'date gear'. However, you can spruce up the outfit since it's evening with some flashy accessories.
