i have a friend who will call thirteen times but never leave a message. mean while, i might have come home looked at the machine, and left again before she called again. but she starts out each phone converstaion with "I called your house, your cell, i called and called....." guilt trip nonesense. PLEASE give me some tactful, non-overt ways to remind her (for the THOUSANTH TIME) to leave a message so that i can know she wants me to call back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (can u tell i'm frustrated?!?!?!)

P.S. Yes, I know that SHE is the rude one here, but since i can't end the relationship (she's somewhat a relative) i have to find a way so that i don't kill her but she doesn't annoy me to death either.............

I've got a similiar problem with a friend and it really sucks because my partner is disabled and often will be home, but cannot answer the phone. I've gone so far as to leave a message saying, "We are not able to come to the phone right now. Due to disability we may be home but not be able to answer the phone, please ensure you leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

It's worked for everyone else with the exception of this friend. I've even had sit down discussion with him about it, and he aplogizes, but like two days later he starts doing it again.

He also:

-Calls at 4 am, calls at dinner, calls 20 minutes after I have let him go because I am watching a movie, doing dishes, etc.
-Calls 1/2 hour after I talked to him for like an hour about nothing..to talk about more nothing.
-Waits until the last minute to hang up so the machine does that awful dead line thing for like 30 seconds.
- Calls so his number shows up on the caller ID, and then two seconds later calls with his number blocked.

See...it could be worse.

Keep your outgoing message really short. My friend simply put "Leave me a message, or I'll never know that you called" on his machine and had a lot fewer people hang up on him.

It's your phone, you don't have to answer it. If she tries to guilt trip you, just tell her you didn't hear from her, didn't know she called, and make it her fault. If she calls a dozen times and can't leave a message, ask what was so important she had to blow up your phone. Let her know she is the wrong one--people like her always want to be the victim--letting her know that she's crapping on you by being that way will help more than her annoying phone habit.

Flat-out tell her..."You don't leave a message, I don't call back. If it's so important that you have to call 13 times a day, leave a message. Otherwise, don't bother me."

Currently...my home answering machine says "If this is a telemarketer, please take this number off your call list. For everyone else, leave a message." I can always tell if there's a telemarketer calling, because as soon as they hear that word "Telemarketer" in my message, they hang up. LOL

=T i would say, "oh i'm sorry i didn't realize. my schedule is so hectic i am in and out all the time, only stop in to check my phone messages!! and u didn't leave a message, so i didn't think it was urgent. next time leave one so i know to call you back :)"

Just say something like:

If you would like me to get back to you, you MUST leave a message!
