Meat, when cooked properly, will actually stay for quite a long time - 3-5 days isn't usually a problem. This is assuming that:
1) You cook it thoroughly to begin with - no 'pink' meat anywhere incl. near the carcass.
2) You chill it to below 5ºC ASAP after cooking (ie. don't leave it sitting on the worktop for 12 hrs!) and keep it at a constant temperature (raising and lower the temperature allows the 'germs' to grow more easily).
3) You handle it as little as possible - remember, your fingers have loads of bacteria on them which transfer to the food every time you touch it.
The most problematic part of your question is the last bit: children are of course more susceptible to food-borne bugs than adults. However, whether you've cooked the chicken one or three days prior (assuming you've followed the above rules) doesn't much increase the risk.

It will keep in a cold fridge (5 degrees) for 3 or 4 days.
It is the time between packaging & eating that is the problem.
Four or 5 hours in a warm, moist sandwich is NOT ideal unless you prepared it in a clinical environment!!
Pack with a frozen 'ice-pack' or frozen bottle of diluted fruit drink (will defrost by lunch) - this will keep it sufficiently chilled.
It will PROBABLY be OK, but salmonella poisoning can seriously dehydrate (vomiting & uncontrolable diahorrea) and may kill the young & elderly in severe cases.

If it is chilled to below +5 degress within four hours of cooking it then it will be o.k to eat the next day as long as it is kept chilled, the reason for this is bacteria needs time, temperature, moisture, and warmth to spread so if you avoid all the above dangerous bacteria cannot spread to a dangerous level hence why you can eat it the next day.. you do it at your own risk though!

I usually find I can still use cooked chicken on the third day but I would probably make a stew with it if I was going to use for children.

My wife's OB said that meat is okay after being cooked for 3 days, as long as it's promptly refrigerated. I would assume that a pregnant woman would be just as prone to bacteria as children.
