You should definitely speak up on this issue, and people should listen to you, as you obviously have a lot of first hand knowledge. The problem with the whole immigration debate is that it seems to be fueled by a lot of fear rather than facts. I think it is also interesting that George Bush, who I would say has a pretty unsophisticated grasp of most issues, has a much more sophisticated understanding of the immigration issue than most of the members of his party. And I think that is because of his experience as governor of a border state. So people should definitely pay attention to those who have the experience of living on the border.

Well, a lot of us live near the border, and some of us may disagree. If the border is the gate to the entire country, everyone in the country is entitled to an opinion about what happens at the border, as well.

You're missing the point altogether. The problem with illegal border crossing does not effect only those who live near the border. Illegals who cross at El Paso often end up in Chicago, New York, or a thousand other places.
You might feel it's your problem right there at the border, and you might be right if you have some way of keeping them right near the border. Otherwise it's everybody's problem.
So figure a way of keeping the illegals right in your back yard, and the rest of the people will stay out of your business.

You're right about the Mexico border states having the most illegal aliens, but that is only half of the total. There are illegal aliens in every state so it really is a national problem. In fact in my state, Florida, estimates are that there are more illegals than Arizona and New Mexico combined, over a half a million. It is more than our opinion. We have a vested interest in the how the immigration issue is addressed in the future.

It's not a neighborhood problem, it's a national problem. My parents came to this country from Europe after asking permission and getting permission and then became citizens. They spent a few years in Canada waiting for permission before they immigrated. Why should people just bypass the rules and do what they want? It's not fair to all those who took the time and effort to do it the legal way. Coming to any country is not a right. Try just moving in to Germany or Japan or China. I don't think it's going to happen.

If the problems in my neighborhood affected the entire country, then, yes, everyone should have a say.
If the illegals didn't suck up government services (MY tax dollars) and stayed in your town, I really wouldn't care. I would consider that to be your problem to deal with as you wish. However, they don't cross over and stay in your town, and they are not self-sufficient.
As long as illegals continue to steal money out of my wallet, I get to have a say in how the situation is handled.

I think we need the opinion of the whole country...the whole country is affected by whatever laws are passed or not passed, not just the border states.

I grew up in New Mexico, my mom still lives there and she hates what she call the 'wet backs'. I believe most New Mexicans hate the idea that they actually cross at their border. Leaving their trash, diseases and other elements there for everyone else to clean up!

Sir,
If in my neighborhood we were allowing a horde of poor, uneducated, sick, dirty criminals to pass through to YOUR yard I really would expect you to be contacting me. If you don't contain your problems and they affect the rest of us I think it is fair to expect at the very least some comments and criticism.
I am curious how you and your neighbors perceive the problem. I hope you will e-mail me. Thanks.
