The Rottweiler was not bred to be a pet. Surprised? Don't be. Most dogs weren't bred to be pets. People that desire these dogs for pets must work at teaching their dogs the rules of society, then these frightening statistics will go away," says Pete Dettori, Rottweiler owner, trainer, and writer for Canine Workshop.< http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/LA/Chirichigno1.htm
We take these dogs out of the environment that they have been bred for, for centuries..because they were so good at it...guarding and herding cattle..and expect them to just fit in to pet homes, without proper training and socialization...It is not the dog's fault..He would still be an excllent herding/guarding dog..We try to put square pegs into round holes....and then blame the dogs..

It isn't the fault of the dogs, and I really think it is the owners who need to go to "school" more than the pets. A caring, wise and responsible owner would never have let that happen.
A few years ago, it was the Alsatians who were targeted as child maulers, but i knew a lady who had two great Alsatians and they baby-sat her toddler all the time.
The media is also to blame; very much so. They will always pick on a negative subject and blow it up out of proportion just to be sensational. How many "happy stories" do we hear in the news? When we do, don't we feel happy too? Enough of this negativity and blame and scaring ... bad things will happen. The Leicester Baby was a terrible tragedy, but as someone pointed out in a previous answer, the parents should never have left her unattended like that. The little boy will live, and the Media is making it's living by starting yet another unfounded witch-hunt.
Licenses might be required for dog-owners and not dogs in future.

Personally, I fell that the human population would benefit some from mandatory spaying and neutering. Especially in the cases where the parents cannot figure out where babies come from and the poor children are cared for improperly. Over all very few parents are tested for genetic diseases. In fact I know parents who are allergic to everything and the have children who are allergic to everything. I feel that anymore there are healthier dogs on the market more then there are healthier people. After all most good breeders would not breed two dogs together that were allergic to everything nor would they breed dogs with epilepsy, IBD, bad temperaments, or other conditions that I see people passing on in the gene pool because they want a child. For some reason people seem to take better care and test their animals then they do themselves. It almost like people feel that they deserve the privilege of reproducing no matter how the child might turn out.

Rottweilers are no different to any other dog. Along with any dog it is the family environment it is brought up in that makes the difference. For some reason some dogs have got a bad reputation but for you only ever hear about the one offs, you won't read it in the news if a Golden Retriever mauls someone. It's very stange when young kids of 14 monthes get attacked by a dog on another property, if it was my son or daughter they at that age they wouldn't be out of my sight.
It's not the dogs it's the owners.

My grandson was mauled by a rottweiler about 3 weeks ago. Thank goodness he wasn't injured too badly. It took 3 people to get the dog off him. Had the adults not been right there when the dog attacked our grandson would most likely be dead now! Our grandson was playing with his little brother when the attack occurred for no apparent reason. They were in the livingroom of their home.
I do not know the answer to the problem with dogs such as Rottweilers or pit bulls, but something needs to be done. Here in Ontario Canada it is illegal to have a pit bull that is not fixed and must be muzzled at all times when in public. No new bit bulls are allowed in Ontario. Is this the answer? No, I don't think so but something must be done to stop attacks on people by dogs of any breed. Too many macho adults think they must have these dogs to prove they are macho. There is a place for such dogs but it is not in the hands of people who do not know how to properly train or properly handle them.
We did not know when this dog attacked our grandson that it had attacked seven others earlier. It also attacked two adults (the owners) afterwords. We do not know the current disposition of the dog. We hope it has been destroyed. It had never had its shots so our grandson is most likely going to have all the painful rabbis shots.

dont be so daft - do u think these dogs have secret meetings and thinking up plans on getting their own back on humans?!?!
these are two very very tradgic events that have happened here to innocent children!
All dogs are different and some have different temper - some breeds more than others. dogs werent always household pets - they used to roam wild and will always have it in their genes to attack if needed. its built into them for defence. but also depends on how people raise them. most people do not mistreat their animals but care and love them like family members. there have been lots of attacks on children from dogs whos owners claimed would never hurt a child.

firstly, i'm not saying that the children that got hurt/killed by rotty's is ok!!! but not all rotty's are dangerous, there is 2 that live down the road from me and they are lovely, even to strangers...
rotty's are so sterotyped, the build, the colour, etc... but that is why the owners make them intimidating to others... my family have always been into dogs, and have had many breeds. i consider them to be protective breeds of dogs, why should they be banned because the owners cannot teach them respect, if it is any better, if i owned a rotty, and i thought that it could and would do harm, i would be the first person to do something about it as a RESPONSIBLE dog owner!

I think that it is wrong to suggest what happened to those poor babies as revenge, considering the distress caused to those families. IF rottweilers wanted to get their own back on humans, wouldn't they bite the idiots that mistreated them in the first place.
