It just puts your mind in a "dreamy" state or you might even fall asleep. It will relax you and you don't feel "freaked out" at all. They actually mix N2O with pure oxygen for you to breathe. After the procedure they will change the mix to just oxygen, which you will breathe for a few to bring you back to normal (you probably won't know when they change it). It is very safe and dentists have used it for years (mostly on kids) I really think it could help calm your fears. When they give it to you just be sure to breathe through your nose so you're getting the N2O. I think if you're nervous it's easy to forget that! Our patients are completely fine afterward and are able to drive themselves home. You won't feel any "pain" with a filling, just a lot of noise so bring your ipod or headphones if you have them! Your mouth will be numb still for a few hours.
Hope this helps!!

I'm going myself today and I am HIGHLY nervous! the Nitrous works very well for me. It relaxes me. Once they put you back to oxygen, it goes away. No big deal. I prefer the nitrous when I'm getting ANY dental work. I despise going to the dentist. I have had no adverse reactions to it.

wow, I don't see the need for nitrous for a simple filling, it's really not that bad. just go in, take your ipod, be calm and tell yourself it's not going to be that bad...because it isn't. the worst is the shot and it's just a pinch. get your filling, then go out and have a beer and get laid, you need it.... you're way to high strung!
