Whether we care or not, this theory if adopted and confirmed by the experts gives us another tiny insight into the life and work of Leonardo da VInci. The scan which was used on the painting was not done to find out information on this particular theory but to examine the sfumato technique which still eludes the art experts.
It's easy to say that this work is a masterpiece. It's a thow away phrase and not many people will argue the fact, but if we as art historians did not examine art works and their histories, then we would be unable to define a masterpiece from a work that was simply pleasant to look at.
It is only this type of careful examination which sometimes reveals information which we have been unable to uncover from historical sources. So what if the researchers have made a parallel discovery purely by chance.

Many years ago I recall reading an article on this painting, specifically concerning her smile, and the author mentioned two theories concerning why Mona Lisa was smiling so mysteriously.
One was that she was pregnant, and the other was that she had recently either miscarried or lost a child.
Of the two, the pregnancy seems to me to be the more logical choice. I know I sure wouldn't feel like smiling after the death of a child, and I wasn't exactly on cloud 9 after miscarrying one.

Since the questions everyone asks about the Mona Lisa are 'what is she smiling about' and 'does she have a secret', the fact could shed a lot of light on the painting.

Seems this is a strange time for the introduction of this theory. Being as so much has been directed toward the picture being a self portrait, by the artist.

We are allowed to think about a broad spectrum of issues and interest. Actually having interest in many areas (current events, people, health, art, enviroment, cooking, history, etc.) makes a well rounded, interesting person. It is nice to know unusual facts - can make for some entertaining discussion.

I think it's interesting. She always struck me as being pregnant, though.
