If you are referring to the "stuff that looks like dirt" in a cats ear... that is actually ear mites. It is little bugs that lay inside the cats ear. You will notice them scratching at their ears some. Most cats have them. As far as the reason your outside cats dont and your inside cats do. I would not know. You may want to do a yahoo search on those little bugs that are in your cats ears. Maybe that will give you more insight to them.

Dirty ears doesn't have to mean ear mites. My cat has some of the dirtest little ears ever, but the vet has told me a couple of times he does not have ear mites. He said to just clean them out with a warm, wet cloth as needed. You may also have to use a Q-tip to reach the small crevices. Your cat will eventually get used to it – mine did. Just be very gentle.

dirty ears on a cat usually means ear-mites. Your Veterinarian will have to give you prescription and show you how to clean out the ears. We track germs, worm eggs and all kinds of microscopic critters in from outside, the pet walks on the floor that we've walked on and then cleans it's feet and viola' they've got "something" that we wouldn't think they'd be able to get....

I have inside cat's as well , My wife gives them a bath every other month. we use cue tips with baby oil to clean the ears. They do get dirty . This seems to work for me.

Even though we don't let them out we do use Flea and tick dip in their water.

Your inside cat may have ear mites. You can find stuff for that at the pet store, Pet Smart, etc, and maybe even the grocery store in the pet food aisle.
