You are lucky because cats really need to think you are so special to do that. You are "Great God Mummy - the Absolute" to your cat. (Doesn't matter if you are actually male or female to them.)
However, the following around is always a major problem with me, as much as I appreciate it.
The street where I live has really changed recently - much more traffic and a lot of road kills ... very depressing. So, when I need to pop out, I have to try to give my cats the slip. It is so hard! I sneak through bushes and go through the field and then double back onto the road, hoping no cat has noticed, but they know! It has stopped working.
I change my shoes so they won't recognise the sound of my footsteps, and when I pass the cats, I walk with a put-on gait for a few yards. They still come.
I pick them up and put them in my husband's car which they like, so far that is working, but I am running out of ideas!
Your cat loves you and so of course it is really flattering. You love him too, maybe, which is his best reward. But don't let it get to point I am out! Phew! Exhausting!
As for the other delightful things your cat is doing, enjoy them while they last. You are his role-model and he studies you to learn as much as he can. Because he trusts you like this, this is such a great chance to train and teach him things ... even crazy games he can play with you - anything. Some people ride bicycles with their cat on their shoulders, others play a game resembling football and you and the cat take it in turns to be in goal and to try to score the penalty ... so much fun to be had. I don't believe in forcing cats to perform stunts and tricks, but when the bond is so strong, your cat might suggest some trick you might like to develop ...
Whatever, love him and listen to him and decipher his requests. You will both be so happy!

I have 4 inside cats. They all love my wife. One ignores me completely unless she wants something. If my wife goes on the deck or front yard , she'll scream until my wife comes in.
One has allergies and sneezes all the time. She will sleep in my arm pit when my wife allows.
One really loves me and follows me all around. she wants loven all the time except in bed, she's a foot cat.
The last is the newest, and doesn't get along with the others. Get her alone she's as sweet as pie.
The point of all this is , every cat has it's own personality and loves different people differently.
Yes you're lucky

I have three cats each with very different personalities. One in particular (a young female) is always following me around. She is always trying to sit on my knee and I often find she is under my feet when I try to walk around the house. Your cat probably just sees you as the top cat and wants to show that he isn't threatening and wants to be part of your pack. I also think that some cats feel like they own the people who look after them.

I am unable to leave a room without my cat following me. He can be sound asleep but the minute I leave the room, he wakes up and follows me to wherever I go. He even sits on the side of the bathtub when I take a shower or have a hot bath.
I think he thinks he's a dog. LOL

Yes! My cat Frances apparently thinks I need a nanny. She insists on being no more than two or three feet from me any time I'm at home. When she decides it's time for a nap, she finds something of mine (sweatpants, a handbag--she's not picky) to cuddle up with. She's a sweet girl and it's touching to me that she does this. It seems your cat is the same way. Cats are very good judges of character, don't you think? :)

My cat only sleeps under the bed and follows me for its twice daily ration of milk. He does however run to greet me when I come in the door at night.

Feel good about that, because every animal that loves their owner will do everything to be next to you. My dog is at my every step!
But in cats different breeds have different attitudes. My friend had a siamese that was so independent he just did his own thing, and came by every once in a while to get a pet on his back.!

My cat GB ( grumpy, ginger or greedy b****** depending on his mood!) follows me everywhere, i take my dogs for a romp in the field-he's there, i go to get coal, veggies etc from the shed-he's there, i try to get in the car-he's there. I go for a bath-he's there attacking my toes in the water. He comes for a run in the car to the village, he sits in the car with my son when he's practising his driving skills round our land (brave cat!), he is truly a people cat, loves to be round humans (and dogs, yes he cuddles up with my 2 dogs,) strange thing is, he can't stand other cats, he gives my other 2 a wide berth.
Guess he just loves me and dogs more than his fellow felines!

When Im inside and sitting around watching TV. Jake likes to be near me.
Whenever I walk to the corner store, Cupid insists on following me! She evens comes inside if there are no other people around to freak her out! The guy at the stores loves it....She also insists on getting into the shower with me after I have turned it off and am drying myself...and she actually rolls on the floor and gets wet, then licks herself! She is weird.....
