This is a good question.
When Akhenaten (whom I happen to look a lot like, unfortunately) turned Egypt monotheist, he did it with a vengeance. It was not a royal suggestion, but an edict. People found practicing polytheism during his reign (and the subsequent reign of his wife Nefertiti) were killed - and made spectacle of.
In the subsequent dynasties, however, polytheism was restored. Egyptians remained polytheistic until Mohammad.

Yes. His religion was different from the polytheistic religions. He felt his sun god religion was correct. He didn't just pick one of the gods to worship. He picked a religion that held there was only one god and so all other religions were false.
