I think it's a sign of the decline and fall of American "civilization", the ultimate expression of the shallowest people getting together for the worst of reasons. Today's version of survival of the fittest is that the most attractive women go for the wealthiest men, without even paying any attention to personalities or values. Speed dating encourages this superficial mentality, which leads to hurried marriages and equally hurried divorces. It's no wonder the divorce rate is so high when people believe it only takes a few minutes to get to know someone.
People today want instant gratification -- fast food, fast internet, fast everything -- but love is something that was never meant to set a speed record. "Love at first sight" is a myth invented by shallow people to avoid admitting that they're shallow and have no clue what true love is. That first-sight attraction is based solely on looks and hormones and gives you no clue about long-term compatibility. Going to a bar and going home with the first good-looking guy who hits on you would be just as good as speed dating. All they're trying to do is give that shallowness a false appearance of respectability by putting it in a more formal setting, but it doesn't fool me.

I havent tried it but from what ive heard and from what ive seen on the tv it just seems embarressing and more than a little desperate and a lot contrived. I think the best place to meet people is through something were the sole aim is not to meet people. I met my girlfriend in a library!
