If you want him to have the benefits of steady government employment, then don't have him stay in the military. Have him work as a Federal contractor. There are plenty of jobs.
I understand that you've both been through one deployment and it didn't agree with you, but that's what he signed up for. If he wants to go active, and if he wants to do a job that may see him deploy, then let him. You can always see him go into recruiting or some other non-deployable MOS, but why? It just sends a message to those who do deploy that there are many who shy away from performing their jobs under any sort of hardship. We don't need two militaries, one that is willing to do the right thing and make sacrifices, and another that doesn't make sacrifices and still expects to collect the benefits and the accolades. That's wrong, dead wrong.
It's ultimately his decision to make. If you don't like it, discuss it with him and have him move onto work in the civilian sector. The last thing we need is a sense that the military is supposed to be all about entitlements with absolutely no hardship involved.

Recruiting. He'll have to do regular recruiting for 2-3 years before he would become a station commander. This MAY be the least deployable MOS, HOWEVER, he still can get deployed to recruit over in Iraq for the Iraqi Army AND the hours and pressure are beyond belief. My husband was picked for a recruiting hardship tour, and he says he rather be deployed then here because of the bureacracy. If he converts, be prepared to be called a "baby-killer" from some people and a "deployment-dodger" from other soldiers. Texas is the best place to recruit because they are more patriotic; stay away from the Northeast and West coast because they are the least patriotic to join.

I'm in the Army so believe me when I tell you that there is no MOS that is Non or Less Deployable. If said person is an E-5/Sergeant, then they can go to Recruiter School for 6 months, and then they will be a recruiter for a mandatory 3 years.

Recruiting has turned into an MOS. So if you want to avoid deployment but still not see your family and add on some heavy heartache with civilians and would be recruits then that's the way to go.
Being Stationed in Alaska is awesome. You should really look into that. It's not always freezing. I'll tell you what, soldiers in Alaska go do cold weather training in New York.

I just wanted to add to what the others have said. You CAN find way to not deploy or disqualify yourself for a deployment. Other then that... most MOS's deploy more then others. Overseas deployed bases are like bases back stateside. They need to be run with just the same amount of personnel as it is going to be stateside.

Every MOS is deployable, and there aren't any that are "less deployable". If you (or someone you know) is in the Army, they are going to end up in Iraq or Afghanistan at some point. The only possible exceptions would be those in the Finance Corps, or those in the medical field with a specialty.

the MOS that has the least chance of deploying is not being in the military. If he doesn't want to deploy, tell him to do us afavor and get out.
