Kong's are great, they are extremely durable, you can stuff them with peanut butter or put water in them and freeze it, the dog will go crazy over it for hours. Nylabones are also good, a little more expensive the a regular bone, but the last for a really long time.

For durability a Kong with peanut butter or treats is great. There are also toy tires that last forever some even have a rope at the end to play tug.
At Petco or Petsmart you can buy Nylabones , Cuz-balls, and the Invinsible Chain. Those will last you a few months.
You can also try putting treats in a empty milk jug or (soda bottle for puppies). It stimulates their mind and keeps them occupied for awhile. Plastic buckets are a favorite with my Rott. Also there are balls made by Cuz I think that are made for durability.
Stay away from anything with stuffing your dog will "kill" it in a day tops! LOL

My dog (a black lab) loves the Kong toy, the black ones that look like tires. They last a pretty long time, and he's a very aggressive chewer. He also loved this bone:

The person at the pet store told me it was indestructable, but he chewed the thing to pieces, but it did take him a few months. Just be careful of any toys if they break apart easily, don't want him to choke or get something in his belly. I love German Shepherds by the way!!!

The best thing you can give your dog to chew on is a RAW beef rib bone (or bones). They are nutritious and they will keep your dogs teeth sparkling white. Don't ever give your dog cooked bones because those are the ones that can splinter.

If you need a toy for indoors there is an indestructable bone or ball they sell at "Tails" in San Luis Obispo, Ca.. I scoffed when the lady said it was indestructable--I have 3 huge Black Labs who LOVE to chew. But, true to her claim, my dogs could not destroy this bone. I was shocked because it's totally flexible and feels like something I could probably take a bite out of. Oh-and by the way it's guaranteed for LIFE! If your dog manages to chew it up they'll ship you a new one for free. They make indestructable balls too.

I don't know of anything you can make that will be especially durable, but there are some great toys for large dogs that like to chew. Kong dog toys are extremely durable. They come in a wide variety of toy types... treat dispensing, tugs, chews, and frisbees. Check some out at your local pet store or online at

I had a German Shepherd, but she wouldn't bother with toys at all! What I use to do, was give her large bones to keep her occupied. Ham bones were the best and would last the longest. I just had to watch so that she wouldn't bury them in the yard! I would take them away when I thought she was done, and then give it back when she wanted it!
She would only play fetch with bones as well! I couldn't get her to play with balls or anything!

Kongs are the only toys that are pretty much indestructible!
They come in all shapes and sizes and can be stuffed with their fav treats, my dogs have been chewing kongs for over 3 years and i have only seen a few bite marks!!

try out the Kong toy's they are supposed to be instructive. they cost a bit more because you have to get a large breed size but on the up side of it they are guaranteed if your dog chew's through it you can get a new one or a refund on it. go to pet smart or pet co they can tell you all about it. it is really a great investment!

I agree with the others that mentioned the Kong. Hmmm 2 liter pop bottles also keep them entertained for a little while as well as an old tire, like someone else mentioned. My brother used to go to the butcher and get his dog a HUGE bone (and he would give it to his dog raw) this would keep him busy for days.

I have to get the really tough virtually indestructible nylabones for my golden retriever. Also he seems to like the toy in the lin below a lot and he hasn't broken that yet and also as other people have said the large kong toys are good.
