I remember during 9/11 nearly 5000 planes *over the United States* were ordered to land. The FAA might have a more current number. World-wide? I would guess approximately 9000 during the day.

That depends on what time of the day and it varies greatly........ There are several very interesting web site that you can go to and watch the numbers ( the little red dots) grow across N. America as it wakes up each day.
