The first part of your statement is most certainly *not* true, many of the greatest geniuses that have ever lived were people with cluttered desks, libraries, etc. Far from showing a cluttered mind, a cluttered desk often shows that someone is so focused on important things (proving a new theory, solving a problem, etc.) that they don't both cleaning up simply for the sake of cleaning up. I have a sign on my own desk that says:
"Einstein had a messy desk, too!"

A cluttered desk is possibly a substitute for the psuedo-adult's mother not being there. A clean desk is possibly a sign of a mature sane adult.

A clean desk is a sign of a detail oriented persone that is very anal retentive. That is my opinion anyway.
