A motel isn't the same as a hotel, either here or in the US. A motel is far inferior, far cheaper, more like a crappy Travel Lodge.

No sure where 'here' is, but a motel and a hotel are two different things, at least, they are in the US and Canada. A motel is a motor hotel, designed for people who are driving, to come in and rent a room for the night. They are typically located close to major highways, all have lots of parking, and minimal cooking facilities as the assumption is the guests will only be there overnight.
A hotel is usually a larger building, located in the center of town or near a tourist attraction or a business center or a hospital or something of that sort. It doesn't cater to highway traffic, and it is usually many stories high. Hotels are usually much more luxurious than motels, and offer such amenities as pools, spas, gym facilities, dining rooms, a bar, conference centers etc.
So they really are quite different things.

In the US mtels were originally one or 2 story buildings where you could drive up to the room door Motel was Motor hotel. Most of the Motel chains have turned into simply hotels that folks sometimes still refer toa as motels.

In America a motel is usually a 1 story run down place that is pretty cheap ususally not a chain just family owned like the Bates motel on psycho...A hotel is a more fanicier version more then one story that has a chain...Like the Hiton or Hoilday Inn..

In the United States we have both "Motels" and "Hotels". Motels are typically one-story, occasionally two, and are located for the convenience of a long-distance driver on a road trip. Hence the name "MOTEL = Motorist Hotel". Motels generally have limited amenities and are not particularly posh.

Hotels are located in tourist areas as well as convenient for business travellers. They are usually multi-level and contain such additional amenities as restaurants, small shops and a more "posh" decor.

While these are not "etched in stone" definitions, they are fairly accurate.

We have both in America. My understanding is that a motel is one story and hotels are multi-storied. Also in general motels tend to be less expensive but offer fewer ammenities (higher-thread count sheets, swimming pool, complementary continental breakfast, room service, etc) than hotels.
