How important do you think education is when it comes to parenting? What level of education do you have and does it effect your parenting?

I am not asking this as a child. I am not asking this because I'm uneducated. I'm asking this just to see what other people think.

You're talking about YOUR education as a parent.

Don't know that it truly plays an important role in the actual parenting process.

It does play a role in the process of rasing them on a mentor basis.

I use my skills to teach the children. I teach computer programing, video, astronomy, chemistry, physics, psychology. All the things I've learned.

But the fact remains than an Edith Bunker can be a better parent than a PH D in Psychology, because she has less bias and more common sense.

Being a loving, intelligent, caring and devoted parent is important. Having a formal education... does not make a good parent. Kids need love and compassion...that cannot be taught in school. I've met people with and without money that are excellent parents. Those that give their time are among the best. On the other hand I've known people with PhD's that abuse their children. Love them, cherish them, tell them that they are your world and encourage their education (as it's well established that more education usually = more $ and having enough $ to not have to worry about it... is nice).

I have a bachelors degree and am financialy stable... and it does help me set an example for my child... but it's not what makes me loving and supportive. My parents raised me this way.

There are lots of very smart people out there that aren't highly educated but it can play an issue in parenting.

Children who come from homes where the parents have a university level education are more likely to go to university. I guess it has to do with the belief that people with education place a higher value on the importance of it and pass this belief along to their children.

Education is extrememly important. I'm going to college this spring to get my early childhood education certificate so that I can be a preschool teacher.

I think education can effect parenting sometimes. If the parent didn't finish high school, how are they going to help their kids with their homework as they get older?

Also, when a parent doesn't go to school and make something of themselves, then it discourages the child from going.

Its very very important...If you aren't educated then how do you ever expect your children to become educated. The problem with parents these days is the always just assume that every one else will eventually teach thier kids things, relying too much on school. But if the child has problems with his work, if the parents can't help him then they become stuck. I think parents should try to become as educated as possible. I know I wouldn't be the person I would have been if my parents had gotten thier G.E.D's not that there is anything wrong with that but they were smart and they raised me well.

Many parents do just fine without extensive education as long as they appreciate it's value. The more education you have the better able you are to understand each and every level your child experiences in his/her schools and there is the possibility of assisting them when necessary. I said possibility because there may be things going-on in your child's school and curriculum that you never experienced!

Both my wife and I have college degrees and encouraged our kids to complete college. Alas, one graduated from a tech school, at the top, and the other just never finished college. They are 30 and 26, now, and both are presently happy with their lives and professions.

Well, I will push the issure very much on my child when she gets older. Without a education, u can't get a good job around here. It is so hard to find good paying jobs with no education. You will be fliipping burgers. But it is very important, and you should stress that to your kids, no matter what. I quit high school right when my senior year was about to start, I now have a GED, and license nurse, CPI certified, MSB certified, so I had to have a education before i could go into any medical position.

For the parent, right ? As long as we can teach them the basics that they will need for kindergarten, we are fine. You do not need an college education to be a parent. Having a college education so you can get a really good job so you can support your family ( husbands job ) is a plus.

My in laws did not even graduate. My husband and my sister in law are very smart. My husband is doing really well in the Navy and she is going to college to be a lawyer.

I teach college math and most of the people who have problems passing tell me that their parents were not good at math and could not help them with their math in school. I think it makes a big difference. It also gives your children something to admire and aspire to. Education is important if you want to have job security (although it by NO means guarentees that, it's almost impossible to have job security without education).
