The service procedures vary from vehicle to vehicle, and you will get certain variations with the same make and model from year to year. The best way to get to correct answer to your question is to go get a Haynes or Chiltons manual for the car you are working on and follow the directions step by step. The timing chains on most front wheel drive cars can be very difficult, and you want to make sure that you do things correctly in order to avoid damaging the car you are working on and/or hurting yourself.
If you are unable to find the manual you need at your local parts store, try your local library or Ebay.

Get a gear drive. It eliminated the chain and drives the cam more precise. Plus you'll never have to worry about replacing old stretched out chaings again.

whobo is incorrect. All Tempo/Topaz engines use timing CHAINS except the mid 80s RARE models equipped with the 2.0L DIESEL, which had TWO timing belts. My question would be, WHY you would like to replace a timing chain on this vehicle. Timing chains are not generally changed on a maintenance routine like belts are.

Timing chain on a tempo, the engine is suppose to be removed, but I fight a little with a jack and the motor mount off, and take the pulley off and then the cover and do it. It's a little hard but it can be done with engine removal.
