Christians and Jews traditionally were "tolerated" because they are of "the book". Muslims consider the Torah (Christian Old Testament) as part of the Koran.
Therefore when Muslims conquered/converted large areas by the sword, Christians and Jews were not immediately executed if they didn't convert because they were of the book. Although they were placed in a condition called dhimmitude. As a dhimmi, you were forced to pay exorbitant taxes, and not allowed to ride a horse or camel, you were only allowed to ride a donkey so that you would not be above a Muslim.
Also taxes for being a dhimmi could be so high that many families, during the Ottoman Empire, had to give one of their sons in payment. These boys were then raised as soldiers and used like the German SS by the Caliph, they were known as "Janissaries".
If a Muslim converts to Christianity or Judaism, he is branded as an apostate and sentenced to death. A family in New Jersey was recently executed for converting to Christianity.
Muslims now hate Jews and Christians and any person not Muslim.
Check out Jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch
Here is some more info..
"Dhimmitude is the status that Islamic law, the Sharia, mandates for non-Muslims, primarily Jews and Christians. Dhimmis, "protected people," are free to practice their religion in a Sharia regime, but are made subject to a number of humiliating regulations designed to enforce the Qur'an's command that they "feel themselves subdued" (Sura 9:29). This denial of equality of rights and dignity remains part of the Sharia, and, as such, is part of the law that global jihadists are laboring to impose everywhere, ultimately on the entire human race.
The dhimmi attitude of chastened subservience has entered into Western academic study of Islam, and from there into journalism, textbooks, and the popular discourse. One must not point out the depredations of jihad and dhimmitude; to do so would offend the multiculturalist ethos that prevails everywhere today.
But in this era of global terrorism this silence and distortion has become deadly. Therefore Dhimmi Watch seeks to bring public attention to the plight of the dhimmis, and by doing so, to bring them justice."

Muslims...some love some hate.
I think the ones that hate are wrong and subdued by the devil.
I'm a muslim and i love Christians and Jews.
Let me just remind you that in the quran...where it says "unbelievers" that mean atheists. people who do not believe in a One God. remember that always..unblievers=atheists
some translations will say unbleivers are christians and jews..that is not true and obviously whoever wrote it is a hater, basically.
back in the olden time..where muslims were surrounded by pagan people...they couldn't find a way to convert them. so they killed some. sorry. and they told chrisitans and jews to pay a tax.
hey i bet anyone would do that.
now, narrow uneducatted non enlighted people..think muslims are the only way and kill the rest (terrorist.) that mentality is clearly getting them into the Hell Fire. Because Islam and terrorism don't go together!!
arabic language is very complicated, sometimes the lightest thing can be misinturpreted in english and cause you to think something else.
Someon once told me, the best way to learn of islam is
1) The Quran it self...in three different english translations by three different authors)
2) A real arabic speaking muslim who can help you understand the Quran better
3)Read commentarys on what different muslims say about the chapter.
veryy long process but you get the idea why, to avoid misunderstandings.

You must be talking about the following verse:
"O you who believe, don't take the Jews and the Christians as "wali". They are "wali" of each other. And whoever amongst you takes them for "wali" he is indeed one of them." (Quran 5.51)
Wali (Arabic ولي, plural Awliya' أولياء, Persian/Turkish pronunciation Vali), is an Arabic word, meaning protector or guardian (most literally etymologically "near one").
This word in some translations of the Quran is translated as "friend" which is not the exact translation. Therefore many people misunderstand it as Muslims do not like Christians and Jews. This is not true. Muslims can be friend with people of the book.
Islam teaches us that we should be friendly to all people. Islam teaches us that we should deal even with our enemies with justice and fairness. Allah says in the Qur'an in the beginning of the same Surat Al-Ma’dah:
"O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah as witnesses to fair dealings and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just, that is next to piety. Fear Allah, indeed Allah is well-acquainted with all that you do." (Quran 5 :8)
I hope that answers your question, if not please refer to the link below.
[P.S Wickliffe is misquoting Quran, go and read the full verse and you will know what I am talking about. For example he quoted 9.5, so go and read 9.6 and you will understand what the Quran is actually talking about.]

the Holy Quran refers to the Christians and Jew as "the People of the Book". They are identified as believers but lost in a wrong way.
Muslims must respect the people of the book, and never harm them unless they start first. and even if they do , they should never ever destroy churches or synagogues .
If a Muslim happens to be in a country where there is no mosque than he goes to pray in a church or a synagogue.
We also believe very strongly in all the Prophets, such as Abraham, Isaac, Ismael, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Jesus.
Basically the road to God started with Judaism, continued with Christianity and ended with Islam !

I think if you take the verses out of context it does sound like Islam is just about violence & intolerance towards the Christians & Jews. There are actually more verses that encourage Muslims and non Muslims to live together without conflict.
For example, Muslim men are actually encouraged to marry People of the Book instead of other religions.
Qur'an 5:5 Surah Al-Ma'idah
This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers but chaste women among the People of the Book revealed before your time. Provided you give them their due dowry, and wish purity, not (illicit or lustful) desire, nor secret (or illegal) relations, nor as "women friends".

Last night at the special evening prayers many Muslims perform during the month of Ramadan this was part of the sura we were reading in our prayer...
Quran 3:113-3:115
"Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration."
"They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous."
"Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right."
What I get from this is that there are good (and bad) people in every faith and only God is really able to judge.

It really depends what kind of translation you read. Quran has been translated by many people and when you translate something, you run the risk of misinterpreting it. To answer your question, Quran does NOT teach that. People have their own opinions. I'm a Muslim and I have friends of different faiths (christians, jews, hindus, etc) and we love and respect each other for the individuals that we are.

You can't make broad-brush statements like that about ANY kind of people...
That having been said, the Qu'ran teaches that the other Abrahamic religions (Judaism and Christianity) are still "of the Book" and tolerance needs to be shown toward them; but they still don't have it 100% right because the prophet Muhammed is the "final word" on what Allah (read: God) wants of his people.

while a text may call for intollerance
it's the action of the individual
your attempt to roll up all people into a label is stereotyping
we are not alike and do not act in unison, but may do similar things based on our choice to follow or not follow a text
in the end, it's the person who chooses, not some ficticious thing such as a christian, a muslim or a jew...those are labels and easy to call for thier removal using religion but give them a name like John or Sally and they become responsible and unpredictable because of free will and choice
the question may be, what do your actions show? do YOU show with your actions you love other people, not labels?
listen with your heart, not with your show or act
