There is a man in San Francisco that runs an agency called Sherlock Bones, that is just that, a Pet Detective. You may want to see his web site at:
http://www.sherlockbones.com or learn more about him at
http://www.sherlockbones.com/bio

He is the finder of missing pets. Great guy and wonderful service. Good Luck in you endeavors!!! Wish more people were so caring and compassionate.

Also Uncle Matty (Matthew Margolis) is a fabulous DOG trainer
that would probably know of other resources. He writes an article called Cats, Dogs and Other People on Saturdays for Arcamax e-zines. His operation is based on Love Praise and Affection rather than harsh training techniques. The library is a great place to preview his books, but they are well worth the investment. Try http://www.unclematty.com to see his site and get his e-mail information. He also runs specials called "Woof!"
on PBS from time to time. Again, Good Luck! Good Detecting!

There are people who make a good living tracking down missing and stolen pets. Most are real private investigators who have gone to the dogs. Some are private citizens who just have a knack for it and are willing to work hard to reunite pets with families.

As far as I know there is no school specifically for pet recovery. I suggest you look for articles on the subject in magazines like Readers Digest and pet magazines. There also might be a few books available by people who are actually doing it.

If you're serious about wanting to work with/for animals, why not work towards a job at your local Humane Society as an animal control officer? The people who answer abuse and neglect calls and rescue the animals.

I don't know about a school, but you might try reading "Sherlock Bones, tracer of missing pets" by John Keane

http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Bones-Tracer-Missing-Pets/dp/0397013353/sr=8-2/qid=1159378002/ref=sr_1_2/104-5678562-0215955?ie=UTF8&s=books

You can also check out his website, maybe if you contact him he could give you some advice?

A Google on the term "pet detective" might also give you information.

I don't think that this position exists, its only in the movies I'm afraid. You can be a vet tho, if you like being around animals.
