I'm sorry you had such a poor experience, and oftentimes that isn't the best way to begin a workout program. Instead, you should focus on feeling good and healthy. That way, you'll be able to achieve your fitness goals without having the "poor body image" problem.
The weight you lose depends on your frame, your body fat percentage and your overall health. Ultimately, you should get a body fat scale and go by your body mass index (BMI) to determine your optimal weight.
Generally speaking, I think that if you lose 15 pounds, you'll see a difference in the mirror, and you can achieve that goal in 8-10 weeks.
You can go about losing this weight the old fashioned way: diet and exercise. Don't go crazy-- just cut out *some* of the junk food and exercise 3-4 times a week. This way, you won't feel deprived. The healthier you get-- the more hooked on fitness you become-- the less crap you'll want to eat.
Begin by setting weekly goals and keeping a log of your workouts. I would recommend 30 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week and some moderate strength training-- no major weight lifting. Burn the fat and get healthy first. Try running if you don't have knee or back problems, cycling if you have knee problems and EFX if you want a low impact exercise that won't hurt your nuts or inner thigh.
Most of all, your motivation is coming from a bad, bad place. If you look in the mirror and hate what you see, it won't matter how much weight you lose. You'll always be thinking about losing weight. Instead, set small, achievable goals for yourself and reach them in a few weeks. Then, set new ones. Focus on health and you'll be more confident, have a better self image and generally enjoy your workouts much, much more. Good luck.

Sounds like you are in the same situation as my boyfriend. Since we moved in together both of us have gain a little weight but in the last couple of week we have been changing our lifestyle and on our way to becoming svelt again.
Anyways, first it depends on your body, I will use my boyfriend as an example. He is 5'11" and currently weights in at 230lbs. When he was in high school he was very athletic, played football and such, he weight around 180lbs. My boyfriend also is very much into weight lifting. I, along with his family and my family do not think that it is reasonable for him to weigh 180lbs now, because since HS (he's 25 years old now) he has probably put on at least 20lbs of pure muscle. So for him I believe that 200lbs would make him look "ripped out" as he would say.
So my questions to you are:
Do you lift weights?
Are you fairly muscular?
Are you active in any way?
If you are then just doing a BMI is not going to tell you whether you are fat or not. A BMI does not take into consideration muscle for very muscular people. For my boyfriend his BMI even at 200lbs would be considered over weight.
I would recommend looking at your life style. What do you eat? Do you get at lot of activity or are you pretty much sedentary?
Realize that losing weight and keeping it off requires a life style change.
You must change the way you eat, what you eat, even how you eat. That's not to say that you must stop drinking beer or eating pizza, but do it in moderation! Moderation, portion control, and just plain being aware of what you put in your mouth through out the day is crucial to losing weight!
Then you need to get out and get some kind of excercise. Join a gym, go on walks, join some kind of sports league. Any thing to get you up and moving.
Let the people in your life know what you are trying to do. They will support you and that will help a lot too.
You have to totally commit to it, but once you do you will be so much happier. Good luck!

Here is a body mass indicator, it can show you your "healthy" BMI:
Height: feet inches
Weight: pounds
You have a BMI of 30.8.
This indicates that you are Obese.
The table below shows value ranges and what they mean.
Range Meaning
less than 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight
30.0 - 39.9 Obese
40.0 - 50 Extremely Obese
over 50 Super Obese
The BMI Formula:
(Weight in kilograms)
(Height in meters)
Apparently 190lbs would get you to the "Normal" range.
As to 'How to" I would check out weightwatchers.com or some balanced diet.
