I started smoking when I was eight just because my dad told me not to. I'm now fourty-two and smoking three packs a day. Wish I had listened to him.

I started when I was 13 because my friends did it and my parents did and I was curious about what the big deal was, so I did it once and didn't get it.
In high school a did a bit because of partying and it was always around.
I stopped for a few years for the most part only once in a great while, then when I turned 18, I could buy my own I would only smoke maybe 4 a day but did a lot of partying and hanging around people who smoked so ended up smoking more because when one person pulls one out it makes you want one.
Now I'm 21, and it's just become a habit and I smoke around 1/2 a pack a day, sometimes more depending on what I'm doing or how stressed I am

Why Did You Start Smoking

I have been smoking since I was 13. I am now 52, and still smoke. I usually go through a pack a day. Why? In my youth it was a form of rebellion against authority figures, and was very inexpensive. It also made one feel 'part of the scene' where it seemed like everyone you knew smoked. I was a relatively harmless way to partake of a taboo substance, while not having to resort to the more serious drug use, although it often did just that. It was mostly just the rebellion of youth. Problem was, we found after a while we 'needed' our tobacco. There were no warnings on tobacco then, and the 'Marlboro Man' still rode across our T.V. screens. Imagine that!

Never started but my dad started just to be cool. He did quit for 8 years but a few years later, started smoking again. However, he plans to quit for good and he never smokes inside the house anymore.

My grandpa smoked for 40+ years and he developed a small tumor in his lung (he died a few months ago from a massive stroke).

My mom's friend's late husband died two months ago due to lung cancer from smoking.

My other grandfather died 11 years ago from emphysema brought on by smoking.

There is no way in heck am I going to put a cigarette/cigar/etc. to my lips. It's bad enough I have to lose weight; I don't want to have to manage lung cancer, either.

I'm 26 years old. When i started smoking, i was 14. I did it because it was just a way to rebel against my parents, who by the way, were both doctors., I felt like they controlled my life and i wanted a way to go against them. A close friend of mine also began smoking around that age, simply because she wanted to see what it was all about. She tells me to this day, after having lost 7 teeth and in the early stages of lung cancer, that she wasn't hooked after the first cigarette: that she did it again and again, just to see what it was like to be addicted, and she regrets it terribly, so much that I have actually been personally asked by her to look after her kids while she is in the hospital, simply because i have started to quit. DO NOT START SMOKING AND THROW AWAY PERFECTLY GOOD LIVES PEOPLE. ITS NOT WORTH IT TO SEE WHAT ITS LIKE.

I'm probably a rare case. I'm 36 and I smoke only once in a great while -- basically only when I hang out with certain friends who smoke. If I see one of these friends once a month, then I smoke once a month. If I don't see them for three months, than I probably don't smoke for three months.

I used to smoke just about every day in college and for a time thereafter, but I eventually quit when I met my wife.

And as for why I started, I'm probably a rare case there, too, because it had nothing to do with peer pressure. I was probably around 18, just out of high school and working this sh*t job as a janitor/errand boy for an engineering firm. One day I was out running errands and it occured to me, "Hey, y'know, I'm 18. I could buy a pack of cigarettes if I wanted to." So I did.

I'm really not sure why I did it. I think it was mainly because I knew I wasn't supposed to. And I was kinda depressed and bored and looking for kicks. It didn't have much of anything to do with "being cool" because no one I knew smoked.

And that's when I started smoking. But even then I didn't really start smoking regularly until a a year or two later. And even then I didn't start smoking every day until a year or two after that when I finally actually went away for college.

Was any of this even remotely interesting?

I started when i was about 13 which was in 1964,i did it to feel grown up and with it,as it was then fashionable to smoke,i know it was very stupid now as i lost my leg because of it, but i still smoke as I'm now 55 and my health in general is not good, which is not related to smoking,so as mad as it is i have no plans of giving it up,i enjoy my ciggies i don't drink or go out socializing, don't have sex so my only pleasure is my ciggies,i wouldn't have started though if all this anti ciggies was about when i did foolishly start,i hope this was of help to you,and if you don't smoke keep it up and never start,i now smoke about 30 a day
