if its an engineering report, bit different, i do marine steam boiler inspections but also repair depends upon what I am doing how i write the report. You have to be clear and itemise the faults also point out the good parts, physically and operationally. You don't usually write about personal experience, you would say something like "in the writers opinion the problem could have been caused by xxxxxx"

The first part of writing a professional report is making sure your grammar, punctuation and spelling are correct. Subject matter is up to you.
