God is a spirit and is the Creator of the universe and everything in it. He has always been, having no beginning and no end and is all-powerful. His power is limitless, the only thing He cannot do is be untrue to His Nature; such as, He cannot lie.
I know this can be difficult to understand, as is the concept of eternity which is very much related to God. However, just because these truths are hard for the human mind to comprehend does not mean that they aren't very real. In fact, they are actually more real than the temporary world we all know as reality.
He also sent His Son, Jesus, as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. If there were any other ways to relate to God without Jesus, then He (Jesus) would not have had to go through what He did on the Cross. Jesus is the Messiah and fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.
I think this sums it up very well, considering there isn't room enough here to write a book! :)

Allaah is the proper name applied to the true God who exists necessarily by Himself comprising all the excellent Divine names and attributes of perfection. Allaah is One and Unique. He has no son, no partner, nor equal. He is the sole Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Every creature bears witness to His Oneness, Divinity, and Ruboobiyyah [Ruboobiyyah, inf. of Rubb], and to the uniqueness of His attributes and names.
His essence does not resemble the essences. He does not inhere in anything, nor does anything inhere in Him. "There is none like unto Him." He is the One, the Sole, the Indivisible. He is the Rubb [Some translate the term 'Rubb' into 'Lord', the meaning of 'Rubb' is far more comprehensive than to be restricted to a single word such as 'Lord'. Rubb, means, among other things, the Creator, the Sustainer, the Provider, and the One in whose hands is the disposal of all affairs], who accomplishes all affairs, Allaah is the Omnipotent and the Omniscient.
His knowledge comprehends in perfect manner all things, hidden or manifest. He is greater than can be encompassed by the knowledge of His creatures. He knows everything, and He is aware of all that takes place in the earth and the heavens. Allaah, the Supreme, is the Rubb of everything and has a free hand in disposal of all affairs. His mercy encompasses everything. He is far removed from injustice or tyranny. He is wise in all His actions, just in all His decrees. His justice ensures order in the universe in which nothing is out of order.
There is no one to share His dominion, nor does He take an aide or supporter from His creatures. He is nearer to man than man's own jugular vein [TNQ 50:16].
Whenever a believer is in need or distress calls on Him, He responds. Allaah has revealed His final Scripture, the Qur'aan, to that last of His Messengers, Muhammed sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam who was responsible for conveying the Message of Islam to mankind. He is the Exalted Allaah. Glory is due to Him.

The answer to who God is is found at Psalms 83:18 which says:
"That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth." KJV
How great is our God?---" Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength."--Isaiah 40:28-29
"Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."--Psalm 90:2
"Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:"--Isaiah 26:4 KJV
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."--John 4:24

God Identtifies himself in the bible as Jehovah ( in english) yahweh in hewbrew.
he shows his attributes.
namly he in not visible to us,
( much like a amoeba can not think of us, but can be affected by us)
you can't understand god on his level,
but you can understand him on the level he has chosen to share.
He created everything,
he stated his purpose for the physical creation in genesis
( to fill the earth, and subdue it)
when humans rebelled, he said what he was gonna do about it
God Is a higher form of life, The highest.
He sets all the laws ( physical, moral, spirtual)
the moral spirtual ones are being ignored by most now, but will be corrected, as he has stated.
The best way to get to know god is to read what he has recorded, study it.
by seeing how he has handled situations inthe past, you can learn a great deal about his personality.
but, you aren't gonna get anything but humans opnions from fellows humans, read it, its well worth it.
also, Pray to God to ask him for help to understand it.
He helps honest hearted ones looking for him
