I took the drive out and attached it to the laptop and it said the drive needed to be re-formatted. We don't want to lose some stuff on the drive. Is there a way around this or is the harddrive dead? The secondtime we tried it with the laptop we had no responce.

Drive is completely dead...thanks for your help anyways...did a analysis on the hard drive from an internet download.

Aint got a clue what short key is, but, it sounds like your harddrive took a dump!

Try hitting F8 repeatedly while your computer is booting. This should get you to the boot menu, allowing you to select a from a number of options, such as Safe-Mode.

I would use Handy Recovery to recover any data from the old HD.
