My impression/understanding is that many immigrants (not just Asians) will save money to start small and build from there. In many cultures there is also a "collective" approach to start a family business (e.g. pooling resources, multiple family members working in the business). I'm sure loans and other resources become available thru normal channels. But I think it is naive to think that a poor immigrant will just show up on our shores and open a gas station, dollar store, hotel, etc.

You say "not american". What does that mean? Just becuase they are of different ethnic background doesn't mean they're NOT American.

Ever heard of the american dream? Well you just described it.

Most immigrants are not poor otherwise they would still be back in their old country.
Having worked in banking for over 20 years, it is my experience that due to language barriers and other factors, finding a job can be rather difficult for them. They anticipate this and in order to compensate, the elders put up the money (at least 25% of start-up costs) and then any bank will participate with the rest of the required capital.
They work hard to make a go of it and the whole family is involved. As they profit, they expand and help other fellow countrymen out. They send their children to college and eventually they fit right in to the national mosaic.
It's not as easy as it looks....and the government does not hand out free money to immigrants.

Actually, asian people don't get loans to start these businesses. They work really hard (some even work up to 18 hours a day) in order to save up enough money to start a business. They don't drive fancy cars or have nice houses, they really scrimp and save. It's old fashioned hard work.
