It means theres a problem with a device that uses DirectX, probably your graphics card. Try reinstalling DirectX and your graphics/sound drivers.

often reinstalling directx works. Though maybe your graphics card is not good enough to play the game. On the other hand you might need a older version or even newer version of direct x ( I would post another question more specific for this )

Direct X is a software the computer uses to track graphic movements in the data flow and ease it better in to the system from a game that has probably been created on a system other than windows.

If you pick up a magazine like PC World or search the web for these magazines (they have their websites or else they wouldn't print) they will help you find the Direct x you might need, or give you the advice you may want.

first thing to do is to check irq conflicts. right click on my computer with your mouse. then click on properties to call up the device manager and check and see if there are any question marks, indicating a hardware or driver conflict. there is a possibility you may have an older driver installed that you may have to delete first. if you see more than one driver installed. if you know which one is the right one. you can delete all of the unecessary older ones that may cause a conflict, with your newer version. if you do not know which one is the right one. delete all of them and reinstall direct x 9 drivers.

It means that your direct x is not available. If you have the program installed uninstall it and then reinstall it again
Then check your video drivers are ok
