I ordered pizza about an hour and a half ago. The estimated time was 30 to 40 minutes. They still haven't gotten here yet. When they get here I am planning to not answer the door to pay or to tip. At first I was just not going to tip but then I got impatient and ran up to a burger joint to get some lunch.
Is this consumer sovereignty or am I just a jackass?

For the people saying to call the place, I tried it before. The manager got pissy with me and told me they don't give out free stuff or discounts. He told me he was fine with losing my business.
While it might not be personally the pizza guy's fault, he is still part of the Papa John's company and in that sense shouldn't get a free pass. Tipping him and taking the cold pizza would validate that their lack of service is OK with me, which it isn't.
Answering the door would be letting them waste more of my time.
Calling them also wastes more of my time, but I did so anyways against my better judgment. All I got was a manager that got in a shouting match with me about whose fault it was and hanged up on.
As I type this, I'm on the phone with his name and location trying to get him (the manager) fired.

I figured I'd reply to this answer specifically:
"Maybe work on being a little more patient and a little less selfish. You are smart enough to know that by not answering the door, you are just wasting the next customers time... transfering your frustration on to everyone else. If you called them, they could just cancel it and not make the next person wait as long."
The next person doesn't have to wait much longer because the only time I wasted of theirs was the minute or so the guy waited at my door. They wasted two of my hours versus my minute of theirs. The way I figure it, screw them its their bad service. What's more selfish than lying and wasting other people's time, then on top of it blaming someone else for your screw up?

"YES! If you didn't call them and tell them you were tired of waiting for it. Also, if they TOLD you up front it was going to be a long wait to get the pizza, then you are legally responsible to pay for it."
They gave me a time frame, and they violated it. I called them and all I got was a rude primate of a manager.
"Secondly, after the poor delivery guy who only makes minimum wage drives out to your house to deliver, you don't have the GUTS to even answer the door and refuse the the thing or even give the poor guy a tip for the effort, "
Why should I tip him for being 80 minutes late or even accept the food after I've already gotten foodand been chewed out by his rude manager for their screw-up? That makes no sense.
Not answering the door had nothing to do with guts and more to do with disgust.
"You want to make it right, go down the pizza joint and pay for the pizza and leave a tip!"
If they want to make it right, they can give me a free pizza and an apology.

"My question to you is how long did you wait till you went up to the burger joint and plus the pizza delivery might have shown up when you were gone. You should/should have call(ed) with a complaint"
I left at around 90 minutes after I had ordered. My friend was here so we know they didn't come in that time frame. When we called them the only answer was an angry primate manager threatening me and blaming me for his mistakes.

Personally, I would consider it rude. I do understand your feelings however, but the problem is the person running your pizza to you, may not be the reason your pizza is so late. I would suggest calling to cancel your order, so they don't waste their time. It may be the fault of the person taking the order, the cook, or who knows?? Just remember the time you were blamed for something that truly wasn't your fault. You never know, and I think it's better to give the benefit of the doubt. The person running the pizza is using his/her car and gas, and working on min wage or less, and for tips... Just something to consider.
I hope this helps

I'm a pizza delivery driver, for Papa John's. :)
Waiting for an hour and a half is rediculous. Personally I have never delivered a pizza more than an hour after it was ordered, and they knew it was going to take that long because it was very busy at the time and they were told that when they ordered it. I always call the customer if I get lost, because being lost is in effect costing me money (uses more gas, probably get less of a tip for being late, and while I am out looking for your house other drivers are taking the other deliveries and getting the tips for them) and whenever a driver is lost and does not call, the customer calls the store and says "why didn't he call me for directions if he was lost?" The maps we have are not always right.
I'm sorry the manager of your local PJ's was being such an *** to you over the phone, when things like this happen at the PJ's I work at the customer almost always gets something free and then they are happy ( or less pissed off).
But to answer your question, I don't think you are being the jackass in this situation. There is no reason it should take an hour and a half to get a pizza delivered.

Why haven't you called them yet? I would have after an hour. I had a pizza place literally 2 blocks around the corner (yes I know, complete laziness) take an hour to deliver. And then the food was cold. I mean, it's right around the corner and they couldn't stop at my place first?
***************
I agree with you completely on this issue. I would be very angry as well. I had another issue with a Chinese place. There is another address almost exactly the same as my work address in a different town. They, a few times, went to that other address even after I told them the town, the company name and that it WASN'T the other business. The last time I ordered from them I wasted my entire lunch brake waiting for them. I ordered at 11:30. The food showed up at 1. When I called they told me that they went to the wrong address. Well, I grabbed the food and didn't tip the guy. I was so friggin' hungry and when I get hungry I can be mean.
I never ordered from them again.

A simple phone call to the store will get you a freebie next time, an apology, plus better service.
Remember, your delivery guy could have:
gotten lost
been in an accident
been robbed
had a flat tire
car broken down
gotten stuck in traffic
etc
Addendum:
Since you had issues when the requisite phone call was made, the next step is to contact PapaJohn's District Manager.
A corporation that relies on good customer relations will not tolerate that kind of behavior from one of its managers. If the store manager doesn't make you satisfied, the DM will.
There is always the option of telling everyone who will listen about this reprehensible treatment. I predict that the errant store manager will not be there very long.

Oops, I didn't read your question right the first time, Waiting an hour and a half is out of the question! You are not responsible for what happened... I mean didn't happen. -0- your fault!!
(My earlier reply)
In the first place, you could have called back to see what the hold up was on your order.
The driver may not have been able to find your house or business.
I would have paid for the pizza and given a tip*.
If you didn't want a pizza, you shouldn't have ordered it.
*Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

You should have called after 40 minutes, and asked where the pizza was. The fact that you left for burgers could mean that the pizza was delivered but you were gone so the pizza was returned to the shop. In which case you can't really do anything but hope that the pissed off delivery guy who thinks you stood him up doesn't have to deliver your next pizza

Because you are asking this, it shows that your behavior is bothering you....
What do you think?
Would you like to make a change today in the way you view the world? Maybe work on being a little more patient and a little less selfish?
You are smart enough to know that by not answering the door, you are just wasting the next customers time... transfering your frustration on to everyone else. If you called them, they could just cancel it and not make the next person wait as long.

I would call them and tell them but I still would answer the door and tip....Thats wrong to deny the food after you complained about it not being there. For all you know if may not be the delivery mans fault why punish him just cause employees at the shop cant get their act together. Plus if you are stern but not overreacting they will either discount your next purchase or give you a free meal.
