my son has a sore place on the bottom of his foot and it really looks like a plantars wart to me but his pediatrician told me that it was so callased over he couldn't tell if it was a wart or something in his foot that has gotten infected. He said to soak his foot in warm water and epsom salts and then file the callus. Has anyone ever done this before? I'm scared they'll have to cut it out of his foot. He's only 4 and I know he'll be terrified.

I've had plantars before and they suck...I was told this remedy and didn't believe it until I tried it.
Get some Compound-W from the drug store and apply it per the instructions. The skin will start to turn white then after a week or so it will peel off. It is 100% painless. If you look at the underside of the sheet of skin you will see the plantars. They look like the spikes of a push-pin. The little holes in the foot will close up quick, just try to keep it clean and dry.
Now the only difference is my feet weren't calloused so you may want to get that trimmed down. But to get the plantars out, use the above treatment.
Its been years and I haven't had them since.

I've had a few of them on the bottom of my foot, too. I've had them removed by a podiatrist and it's not pleasant. The podiatrist cut out the wart with a surgical knife after numbing the area.
The last time that I had one I bought a kit in the drug store. I forget the name of it, but it's basically nitrous oxide that you apply to the wart. It's so cold that it freezes the wart and it falls off. The wart is a living organism/virus and will die under certain conditions. Check around your pharmacy--the freezing method was relatively painless.
I've also heard of doctors using the freezing method. Ask your doctor.

Do not use your finger. Plantar Warts have seeds, and the warts will spread to any area you touch with it.

Does your insurance cover visits to a specialist? If so, you need to take him to a podiatrist. If it's anything that's infected, it needs to be addressed immediately. While it may clear up on its own, it may not and the infection can spread and grow, with dire consequences.

whatever it is filing it after soaking it wont do it any harm. it'll tell you what it is. You have to file a wart down anyway
