Plasma presently offers the better (best) picture quality compared with LCD. The colors are more vibrant, images sharper, motion is better. The threat of burn in is less an issue these days... the newer plasma panels have addressed the issue with technology - better gas charge/discharge electronics, smart color rotation, etc... you can expect to watch regular TV w/o threat of burn in... however, if you play a lot of video games and/or leave the TV on with a static image for a prolonged period of time (greater than 4hrs straight) then you can expect burn in... so think about how you use your TV now and in the future.

The black spots are most likely pixel burn outs... each individual point or pixel that fails cant' display color because the gas charge/discharge electronics has failed. You'll have to exchage the whole panel... shouldn't be a problem if covered by warranty. If an LCD panel fails, then you can swap out just the panel. In either case, the occurrences do happen - it's hardware after all. But the likelyhood is very low, especially on the high end models.

Plasma for main TV use. TV DVD things like that
LCD if you want to replace a computer monitor or if you have kids that play video games and walk away from the screen with it paused. Static images are an issue for plasmas but they do give the best picture
Burn in is caused by leaving an image on the screen for to long that is why computers have Screen Savers. But Kids sometimes play video games pause the game and walk away for hours. Check out the articles.
Plasma and LCD do not give a life on the TV they give a half life for the gas or liquid meaning that after about 60000hours of use the tv will be half as bright as when you bought it. So unless you normally keep a tv for 30 years you should not have to worry about that. Electronics do break and manufactures do not say when they expect it to.
Size wise plasma is generally cheaper then lcd but they don't make the same sizes so that is a difficult comparison.
Go plasma you won't be disappointed

the answer alllies in HOW YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT.

1.where are you going to put it?

this makes a big deal because plasma screens have a glass screen and can reflect light and obscure viewing.like old tube tvs. lcd tvs wont reflect light, but will change contrast and color with direct light.if you mount your tv up on a wall, the lcd tv wont look as good as it would straight on.

2. computer monitor? lcd tvs can tend to be a little bright at times, but great monitors.if you use plasma, make sure you have a moving screen saver to make sure no pixels get stuck(burn in)

remember, lcd and plasma tvs will both last an average of 60,000 hrs(about 27 yrs), but you must take the correct precautions to make it last.
1. surge protector rated at least 1000 joules.
(with clean power)
2. keep picture contrast at about half.

I'm still afraid of the burn-in factor on plasma TV's. Ask about this and see if it is specifically covered in the warranty before you buy plasma.

Depends on big or small. Up to about 36 inches are LCD, above that they're either Plasma or DLP.

LCD because it has nearly as good picture quality as Plasma, but it lasts longer.

LCDs are cheaper, last longer, and use less power. Plasmas have a better picture.

neither get a dlp projection, easier to work with and adjust, and if you get a burnt out lamp just replace it. don't get me wrong specs on plasma do exceed any other out there, but the burn out factor has not been perfected. don't let anyone fool you. plus with a dlp you can get a huge picture for a quarter of the cost. but in all honesty this question can't be answered except with personal opinion

If you have the money, get plasma.
If you're like me, settle for LCD.
