I am interested in a man who works with me; we don't have the same roles, are not "team" members, we don't even see eachother or speak to eachother on a daily basis; we work in two different depts...
despite there being a lot of people, it is a small world.

I am 37, I think he's about 42. I don't see a ring on his finger (realizing) that may mean nothing at all....we have light conversation, he seems to always go out of his way to speak to me when I'm around, he jokes with me too, nothing corny, but he shows his sense of humor.

Previously conversations revealed we both grew up in the same area. I asked how he ended up working where we are and he said he moved on to "greener pastures"
I would like to sit down with this man and just have a drink, coffee, get to know him a bit more, I'm not looking for a long time commitment at all, not interested in marriage, just someone to date once in a while and wouldn't mind having a sexual relationship either. How to ask without feeling dumb

I welcome you to what we men deal with all the time. The best answer in my experience is just to be straight forward. In your next conversation, no matter how short it is, just say, "We should get some coffee sometime." His reaction will tell you everything you need to know and you can go from there.

Why not just paraphrase your own words:

"[In] previously conversations revealed we both grew up in the same area. ... I would like to sit down [you] and just have a drink, coffee, get to know [you] a bit more, I'm not looking for a long time commitment at all, not interested in marriage, just someone to date once in a while..."

Seems to say everything you want to say... I'd make it more conversational, but the main point is right there.

Don't do it!!!! I know its tempting.. its very hard to find someone who you connect with when you are working 40+ hours a week.

why? because your company may have a policy about employees dating.
Even if it doesn't you are opening both you and him up for a sexual harassment case (yes.. women are getting slapped with them now too).

Say hi.. be friendly but leave it at that.
