Do people think they are obligated to accept things like the story
of Eden as being literal, instead of SYMBOLIC, when the Book itself says not to "give heed to fables that turn from TRUTH?"

Actually, being a Christian DEMANDS critical, progressive thinking. It is only atheists that are stuck in a rut!

zenbuddhamaster,
"Does being part of the CHRISTIAN faith mean one is not allowed to be a PROGRESSIVE thinker?"

If I answer "no", would you put any kind of weight on my answer at all? Do you put ANY intellectual value on the questions you ask? If so, then, "NO!"

I don't care what you believe. I beleive what I do based upon the Resurrection, not that story. I think that if the Genesis story is true, then it will have many people bewildered. God kinda works that way, so I do tend to believe it literally.

Gregor Mendel, father of genetics. For the 19th century, one of the most progressive scientists of his age. He was a monk.

Teilhard duChardin, anthropologist, philosopher. A man whose ideas of God were so progressive, so advanced that most could not understand them, so the Church put them on hold until the rest of us could catch up to his progressive thoughts. He was a monk as well as a priest.

Progressive is one thing. Thoughtlessly radical for radicalism and shock's sake is something else. Progressive might not be welcomed in some denominations, but the Church no longer fears it. Just tries to keep it from getting out of hand.

I am not certain about the term progressive, but I do believe that we are all called to investigate the word thoroughly seeking the truth. The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord.

No.

BUT

Being part of the Evangelical Born Again Christians means your not allowed to be progressive, in fact, in their case you are required to be regressive in your thinking.

Depends on the televangelist you watch on tv... they don't want you to think for yourself because if you did.... you would know they are a bunch of idiots... making more idiots of the people who listens to them

I do not think that it is mandatory not to think. There are a few Christians on here with a brain, Tofu Jesus for example.

Bad stereotype.

One that non-believers use to make themselves feel "superior" to Christians.

Believe as you wish, but this question is narrow minded in itself.

Peace!
