Mother is the most important teacher of a child's life. Whether or not she is the best, depends on the mother. No school can replace parents as teachers of children, or make up for inadequacies of parents as teachers.
Children may overcome these themselves, however.

Yes, we home school and no-one knows my child like me. I can tell when some topic is frustrating her and we can approach the subject from another angle. I know her strengths and weaknesses and work with them or around them. Evenings seem to be the time when she learns the most, so we do some of our work then.
I make sure she gets lots of interaction with other kids and people in general, lots of fresh air, lots of guidance, lots of good morals & values.
I may not have a teaching degree, but I am perfectly capable of teaching a nine year old math, English grammar, punctuation and spelling, and sciences. As she gets older we will probably encourage her to take high-school on line.
However, I must say that not ALL mothers are the best teachers.

I think it depends on the mother. If she's smart and can learn things she doesn't know to teach to the kids and also is saved I think she would be the best teacher for her kid(s). If mom does drugs and can't even pick up a book then kids need to find an alternative teacher.

Mother is the FIRST teacher, but as for BEST? That depends on the mother, the child, and the issue. There are some mothers out there who might do best to just let others do it all. On the other hand, some mothers ARE teachers. Anyway, that's my thought. I just keep thinking about this mother I saw with her 2 yr old the other day at WalMart who acted just as immature as her child. Sad.

I believe so. It is she who teaches a child first. Her God given responsibility. I learned more from my mother than I ever did any school teacher. I teach my sons. They are my responsibility and my life.

Yes and no.
This question leaves the reader to only suppose it's meaning.
The best teacher *of*....??
The best teacher......(where?)
I will assume that you mean "Is mother the best teacher for her own child in academic situations?"
My answer is still yes and no.
*If* mother accepts her role as the parent that God created her to be when he gave her the precious gift of a child (or many children) she is definitely the best teacher. She is the best one for the job because she knows her little one's better than anyone else around.
She is the best because she is mom! My mother was and is my very best teacher. I learn more from her than from all of my 12 yrs of public school teachers put together. From mother I learned to think, to work, to play and to study. From mother I learned to love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul and mind. From mother I learned that life is precious and that I must hold it near and dear to my heart. I learned from her that other people are to be respected and loved because they were created by the same God that loves me. She taught me to care for others and to be honorable and worthy of the salvation that I receive when I believe in Jesus Christ the son of God.
From mother I learned that Jesus is the best teacher of all time -- he is the most important teacher in history --- and HE didn't use textbooks, workbooks, or chalkboards.
He wrote in the dirt with a stick!
The very best school teacher that you can have (secondary to mom) is YOU --- If you accept the job that God has given you to learn and to grow in wisdom and understanding you can build study habits for yourself that will last a lifetime.
Knowing how to think and how to study is the major goal in our home. Self-teaching has been proved time and again to work!!! It works very well -- I can say that with confidence because I've seen the results with my own children. They are their own best teachers!!!!
I don't know if they think that I as mom am in the "best teacher" category. We never talk about that.
I do know that they are the best student-teachers in my house!!! ;-)
We don't have a "picture perfect" homeschool. We are all human and with that comes issues that must be resolved on a daily basis --- but still at the end of the day when we sit back and realize the accomplishments of each child we can say, "Well done!".
My homeschool students are now 23, 20 -- one is working and married with his own children, one is in college and faring very well --- and my others are 17 and 15 ----- they are nearly finished with home-studies and have proven to me every day that home-schooling works. EVEN on the days that it seems like *nothing* gets done --- it still works.
Home-schooling works even when it doesn't work.
Our friends lost their mother at a young age. She died when the oldest was only 12 and the youngest was not yet 2 yrs old. The 6 children in the family lost their best teacher! And yet their father was able to put together a plan and method for them so that they could remain at home for their entire k-12 education. They used self-teaching to prepare for college --- the oldest is now a practicing veterinarian, the next *child* is a professional chemist, the next is finishing studies to also become a veterinarian, 2 are now in Graduate School for nuclear engineering and the youngest studied Saxon math level 54 thru Calculus - taught himself Physics, AND continued to study and take AP exams -- he is now starting at a University. This is his first campus schooling ever! He will graduate with only 1-1/2 yr of campus study. NOT a 2 yr degree either --- he will earn his 4 yr degree in that 1-1/2 yr time-frame.
Self teaching works!!!!!

most of the time, yes. i disagree with whoever said that ppl shouldnt teach things that they arent professionally trained to teach.. umm, excuse me, but have you seen some of the rotten teachers in the failing public school system?? if you think they are better qualified to teach my kids, youre wrong. how can they give my kid the attention and time that i could, when they have 30+ kids to be teaching. its never gonna happen.. overall, i believe homeschooling is the way to go. undivided, personal attention to your child. how can u go wrong??

it is beginning to look like it.
i always thought experience was the best teacher but these days with all the school drama...the only thing i have against home schooling is the lack of different perspectives.
so if you are an openminded, multitalented woman go for it.
