It can certainly harm the enamel if you are brusing improperly. Many people do not know the correct way to brush their teeth. A SOFT bristle brush tilted at an angle towards the gumline in a circular motion is recommended. If you are brushing back and forth that can cause cervical abrasions that can be very sensitive. You do need to brush after every meal, and floss at least once per day before bedtime. Many dental offices carry prescription rinses, toothpastes, and floss that are very good for homecare. If your gums are bleeding and inflamed you quite possibly are in the beginning or advanced stages of periodontitis. Do you have an odor even after brushing your teeth? An overwhelming percentage of the population suffers from some form of gum disease and perhaps don't even know it, because it doesn't necessarily "hurt." My suggestion would be to schedule to have a professional cleaning, xrays, and comprehensive examination including a 6 point periodontal charting. The hygienist and doctor will be able to tell at that time if you have periodonal disease. Ask when scheduling if they do this charting, if not, call a provider that does. This disease deteriorates the bone that supports the teeth. In other words, if left untreated your teeth will become mobile, and will eventually just fall out.

Well it sounds like you have a combination of problems. For the swollen gums you can do this. #1 Floss 3 times per day. Yes it will bleed more at first but it will eventually stop as the gums toughen up and get used to getting cleaned.I used to have this problem until i started doing that and I basically cured it! Brush y our teeth GENTLY after all meals as well as drinking any kinds of juice or sodas. You may also want to start taking a viatmin C supplement to help with healing the gum tissue. Using the right toothpaste is very important. Arm N Hammer is great used once in a while but it can be too abrasive as well as some of the other whitening pastes.I use 3 different toothpastes alternating them so as not to harm my teeth. For swollen gums, rinsing( swishing) baking soda and warm water around your mouth after brushing is supposed to help with the swelling. The main thing is to floss, get the right floss for your teeth and go down deep into the gum gently and slowly.if you can afford it get your teeth cleaned by a dental tech at least every 4 months until the gums start to improve. That really helps keep the plaque down. You didn't say if your're male or female but when women start going through peri menopause ,the drop in hormones can also cause swelling in the gum tissue. It's easily solved with natural hormone replacement. This is why I say a combination of things must be used to solve it.Give it at least 4 to 6 months and you should big changes. Good luck!

really all you need is to brush once a day.. most likely before bed when you are in that fasting period from the moment you sleep to wake up.

that's when the most activity is going on in your mouth along with that saliva production.

get a medium hardness brush also..and floss too. get some mouthwash if not already.

the enamel is strong but too much abrasion can weaken spots of it.. and the gums may be swollen due to too much friction via a hard brush or redundant / improper brushing.

just once!

don't go crazy your teeth won't rot out of your head!

give the enamel and gums a break!

:D

I used to know a guy who used to brush his teeth every hour - and his teeth weren't that great afterwards - Only brush twice a day - it does ruin the enamel, also be gentle when doing so.

I don't believe you can brush your teeth TOO MUCH. But, you can brush them too VIGOROUSLY!!!! You'll want to use a soft bristle tooth-brush for your daily care. And swelling of the gums is usually a sign of gingivitis/gum disease...not too much brushing. If you are brushing too vigorously, you can scratch the gum tissue, which will cause irritation and redness. Flossing daily is just as important as brushing!
