The process of becoming a citizen of the United States is called naturalization. A person must meet certain requirements to become a naturalized citizen: Some of these include:

a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;

residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing;

an ability to read, write, and speak English;

a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;

good moral character;

1. You have to have green card for a 5 years with no major criminal records.
2. If you are married to u.s citizen and holds green card, you need to be married for 3 years after getting green card in order for you to apply citizen ship.

You can apply through lawyer (little costly) of you can do it your self.( But I will recommend getting help). There are lots of organization that will help you to apply for U.S. citizen with low or no cost. You should check around. Once you apply, it will approximately take 2 - 6 month for INS to send you a notice for test. (go on-line to look for citizenship test questions). When you pass the test, they will send you another notice to appear at swearing to become u.s citizen!
