There is a stray male cat, not neutered, outside that I am thinking of taking in. I have heard that cats neutered later in life have a tendency to spray. Is there any signs that he may do so after I neuter him?

oh yes hun hehhe i have 6 boys and b4 they were neutered it was sheer hell!!!! i would wake up every morning in tears because they had sprayed EVERYWHERE!!!! not only spray hun they will actually urinate puddles to leave thier scent..nastyiest thing ive ever witnessed so heres what they will do: 1) they will search search search!! and meow meow meow..you will see them sniffing things like your cupboards, fridge, stove, and thier favorite the washer and dryer..corners also!!..you will see them back up to the object and thier tail will be erect this is que hun STOP THEM!!! QUICK,QUICK HURRY HES DOING IT NOW!! LOL!! try to catch the 1st sign of it and distract him by throwing a toy or spray him with a spray bottle...if he does spray go to your local quility pet store and buy natures miracle! it truley is a miracle it eliminates all odors perminitly trust me i kno lol..its quite costly a small bottle is 8 dollers a big bottle is 23.00$ but you get what you pay for..it also discourages the cat from using the area again..if you cant afford that buy some good ol white vinager ..good luck get that boy fixed asap b4 it becomes a habit and immune to spraying..

Shush... how do you know your future children will not grow up to be delinquents or criminals? Give him a home, love him and show him affection and love, and get him neutered as soon as possible. There ARE sprays that you can use to prevent him from doing that. As a vet or pet shop manager that knows about felines. The kind of love and companionship that feline will give you will cause you to forget your fears. Oh, by the way, if you see him put his tail straight up and sort of makes his tail tremble... he's spraying. He's making sure that no other cat comes around "his" territory! (Like when they rub their foreheads against you... same thing... they're marking you with glands over their foreheads and claiming YOU as they exclusive property... does not give off odors... don't worry... it's love!)

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I have always heard that once a cat starts spraying, there isn't much you can do about it. I'm going to have to keep an eye on this question and see if there are different answers.

Oh, I forgot to add that there aren't really any signs that he "may" do it...only the smell after he's done it, which is really hard to get out of your house.

get him neutered if you take him in regardless, you may have caught it in time. there are some cats that after they are neutered they completely stop but there is a possibility that even after being neutered they will continue to spray.

He must be neutered if you are going to avoid any spraying. Sometimes it can't be avoided if the cat is stressed, sees cats outside, etc.

It doesn't have to happen and it can, even with a spayed female. Why anticipate trouble? You can deal with it IF it happens and it may never happen.

The Fact that he is Alive is indication enough that he will spray.
this is a Territorial response and has little to do with whether or not he gets neutered after you bring him in.
It is how cats let other cats know that the territory belongs to them.

most males will spray to mark, therefore, as soon as laws say you can in your state, to fix them, do so to prevent them from wanting to.
