From NYC jetblue is pretty cheap.

I would think that driving would be cheaper and you wouldn't have to pay for a rental car once in Florida.

I think the real question to ask is this, do you have time to drive there and back. It is approximatley 1270 miles from NYC to Ft Lauderdale. When I drive I figure an average of 60 miles per hour, this factors in stopping for gas, food, reststops, etc. So it will take you about 21 hours to drive there non stop.

This could probably take you 2 days to drive there and 2 days to get back. That's 4 days lost to driving. If you have only a weeks vacation, you are going to spend more time driving than enjoying FL.

I would recommend flying simply because of the time it saves you to actually enjoy FL.

If you book right now, it would be cheaper to fly to Ft. Lauderdale. Flights from Newark to Fort Lauderdale are less than $200 right now. To drive to Florida, it would take at least 2 days and cost at least $100 per day if you pick up the rental in New York. Plus, if you don't plan to return the car in NY (but drop it off in Florida), the rental car fee nearly doubles.

I am not sure as to the cost but it would still be cheaper then flying. More important is the trip by car is so fun. My husband and I enjoy the time to talk and catch up. We make it a point to stop along the way and do last minute shopping at small town gift shops and antique stores. We stop and have coffee and hot chocolate and enjoy the trip. We drive from ND to WA for the holidays.
Good luck and enjoy.

Unless gas prices go way up, driving should be cheaper.
I've always found road trips more fun than flying. Car has a lot more leg room. If you're in no hurry you can take little side trips and do some exploring.

How do you possibly expect someone to know how much gas will cost you on a Mustang V6? That is an unrealistic silly question.

Christmas travel you should have booked MONTHS ago! You must have no idea how huge FLL travel is and how popular Christmas family vacations are. FLL is a cruise port also.

Good Luck, seems to me you will be driving. Your looking at about 1200 miles =)

Its not only gas, its tolls, overnight stays and avoer 2000 miles wear on your car. Given the fac that it will probably taken a total of 4 days for the round trip drive, flying is the only sensible way.

Do not drive it is not worth it. With the price of gas it will cost you more then $300 roundtrip with that mustang. Fly Southwest from long Island Islip airport.

Advantage of driving, you have a car when you get there.
Car rental in Ft Laud. during holidays is $$$$.
Assume 20 MPG, it's about 1250 miles, 2500 miles round trip, so that's 125 gallons @ $2.50 = $312.50.

Maybe u should fly because traffic might be really bad espicially during the holidays and the weather. If airfare is too expensive y dont u try the train? if not then i guess u have 2 drive..
