This thought is now unnecessary. once upon a time it was possible to use force by the states when might was right , to convert people to any religon that the state favoured. The path of forcible conversion was laid by the chritians only through sin .That is by using force because the church had influence over the kings and the rulers. the same mehod was folowed by the Arab traders who aquired power to invade other countries and wer able to levy penality or inflict death on persons who refused to conver to Islam . in the case of islam the very forcible conversion is commanded by the religon itself .Npow that it is not possible to use force to convert any people to to any religon, the fundamentalist mislims are resorting to terroro to punish people , not een knowing that such a behaviour will only estrange people from that religion and dame theimage of the religion. the chritians are now resorting to inducements . all these are doine so as the increase the income of the church through thithe , a compulsory levey of offering to the church to the extent of ten per centof one's income . the churches stand to gain a lot aof money if they increase the enrolment of members to it .It is all business only .,the person Jesus in whose name the religon is established was living like a mendicant not even having a second set of clothes; . but the missionaries who are practicing a religon that jesus did not establish but others did it in the name of that good soul spread the religion by violence contrary to the teaching of jesu himself and committied a sin. They are enjoying the comforts of living in palacial houses with all modern amenities and comforts and they want to maintain their lucrative busness by persuation and publicity and the threat of being consigned to a non -existent and non-sensical hell and thus demeaning God as a terrorist dying to secure the obeisance of the mortals by threats of punishment in hell.
Since the threats of religon has been fostered and installed in the minds of the humans over a period of several centuries and since it is so ingrained in the blood that it has become an integral part of the human brain as a virus , it will take quite a long time for them to understand the real nature of things in the world with the growth of science . Sincedthe development of science will strike at the roots of follies that the chrches have been thriving on , they are oppsed to the developmemt of science and are seriously workiong against the deveoment of scientific knowledge .
The church instead of developning its knowledge and expanding the knowlkedge of the humans about the nature of things is trying to stifle the development of knowledge and keep the humans under the darkness of ignorance for its selfish ends.Any religon that opposes and hates being questioned and is angry with those who ask questions because it is unable to answer questions and stands on the heap of follies and lies. It is afrand of loosing its clout founded on ignorance and does not know how to live with truth. .The Bible has been modified many times in so many ways . the churches can modiy it to suit modern times in accordance with scientific knowledge instead of opposing science and insisting on making /god an unscientific entity.
Nobody could say how many people would have even thought of God i the European counties if there had not been , no compulsion.compulsion .

The answer is simply - I don't know what the percentage of Christians would be in various parts of the world if Constantine had never converted, I don't know if China is the best comparison though, because the bulk of early Christian converts were already in a monotheistic culture.
Pretty good run down of history, but it wasn't just slaves and marginalized people that were converting to Christianity. Luke, was a Physician for example.

Please see the attached. According to wikipedia Christians in India are up about 5 million since the 1990's. Numbers in China, are also considered to be "underestimated" (how many people really want to admit they follow a religion that is illegal by the state). I have a friend that went to China to teach English and had so many students craving for "the WORD". They knew some things from the Bible, but mostly the Old Testament. And, had no information on Christ, and things in the New Testament. When many of them came to her for information she gave it, and many came to know the Lord.
Note, other religions use force in the past, besides Christianity. People then had a different mentality. It was a barbaric time, a barbaric world. Some people, these terrorist muslims in the middle east and in Darfur, for example, still live in that world, and have that mentality, this the head chopping off, raping and beating women, etc. It is sadly, their plans for us. But, we live in a different world now. The people who are coming to know Christ now, are doing so by educated choice.
I can only deal with what I can change. I cannot change history. I can, however, learn from it. Move forward, and do my part.
As to your question of how many people would have converted without force, we will never know. But, I do think in time people would have figured out that Thor, Athena, Osiris, et al. weren't real.

Way back then all religions were continued by force, Muhammad spread Islam by force, Muslims and Christians fought each other with force to conquer lands for their beliefs during the crusades.
Even today, Muslims are taking Areas of Africa by force to further Islam.
The Christians have learned that is not the way Jesus wanted us to live.
Peace!

Oops, I think you missed something...
Constantine did NOT impose Christianity, by force, onto the Western Roman Empire. He merely ended the persecution that had been going on for decades, returned much property to the Christians (that had been confiscated by the state), and gave the known Christian clergy the same tax-exempt status granted to the other religious bodies at the time.
Since Constantine was himself a professing Christian, it became the "in thing" for other senators and political people to "embrace" Christianity, at least to look good in the Emperor's eyes. This is called "sucking up", not "faith". With the Emperor's good graces going to the Christian priests and other clergymembers, suddenly the pagan priests found themselves loosing worshippers. In order to keep their jobs, many of them also "converted" to Christianity, in order to become "priests". Again, this is called "sucking up", not "faith".
Constantine ended religious persecution during his reign. He was installed in his palace in Constantinople with PAGAN, as well as CHRISTIAN, rites and ceremonies. He was well aware that there was more than one faith in his empire, and being a GOOD POLITICIAN, he tried to make nice with all of them.
With a lack of miracle-working priests/priestesses, how was the temple of Apollo supposed to compete with somebody who could cure the lame? The priest of Zeus couldn't give sight to the blind, but the apostles did. NO CONTEST.
"Those converted at the point of a sword have very little faith." This is a well-known axiom. Force produces slaves, not saints.

as a splinter sect of Judaism, I would suspect....about the same percentage as current Judaism...maybe 1% to 2% of the world's population...
an ancillary question: at the time of Constantine, the "other" religions that were about as wide spread were Mithra-ism and Zoroastrianism....
how many believers in Mithra or Zoroaster would there be today if Constantine had chosen one of them as the official state religion for the Roman Empire????

What is in a number (s) ?
Religion is nothing if it is not lived.
All the religions teach the same thing_brotherhood amongst all the human beings; Where is the problem ?
The problem is that we don't follow the religious teachings.
Let us not find faults. Let us all live together in peace and praise the God! Let sanity prevail and permeate the universe.

I observed a guy run around the exterior of a pool crammed with a non-Newtonian fluid for this reason God is real, and likewise the soul is an invisible organ interior the human physique that's teleported to a minimum of one in all 2 parallel universes, the two heaven or hell as quickly as we die.

I don't think China is a good example because the Christian populace is largely operating "under the radar" because of government persecution, but I agree with the rest and it does persent an interesting question to ponder!

Why do we Nit Pick about the past? We live in the HERE AND
NOW. Why do people think all Christian people still live in the
Dark Ages? The Bible itselfink every Christian feels obliged to
believe the story of Eden is literal, rather than symbolic?
