it is just a myth, they do not hate each other because they are cats or dogs, they just do not like anything that they feel threatens their safety

Cats and dogs can get along. I have read that the best way to have a cat and a dog get along is to raise them from a puppy and a kitten to a dog and a cat. This is because when they are young they are each other's playmate and they will continue to accept each other when they are "teen-aged" and adult.
There are also instances of dogs and cats making friends after they are grown. I lived next door to a lady with three daughters. These daughters had a kitten they named Calico. The daughters either did not know how they should take care of a kitten or they did not care. I think that they did not know. What they did was to cut off the tip of one of Calico's ears. She came under my fence a lot and she stayed with me and my dog Lady. Lady accepted her as a friend because she was hurt and Lady even let her eat food that I put in her bowl. Calico and Lady were good friends. Finally Calico got to go to another, better home where she was loved and cared for.

Not all cats "hate" dogs and not all dogs "hate" cats. Yes, they can learn to tolerate and even "like" each other. Cats and dogs that are raised together from a very young age usually get along better, especially if they are accustomed to each other as kittens or puppies. Even "friends" will sometimes play fight just like siblings.
Some older animals are just more docile around other species by nature, just as some animals are plain tempermental and grouchy.
I have a mature cat that has always been interested in and liked "most" dogs and lived with various whippets over time, he even sleeps with my current dog and eats beside her from time to time. Even so, he senses dogs that he doesn't trust and hisses at them or runs away.

Yes, some do. I think you have to have a dog that isn't going to always chase the cat or the cat won't ever come out of hiding, but a lot of families have both dog and cat as indoor pets and they do get along well.

Dogs an cats dislike each other because the both need attention and territory but it is possible for them to get along with one another. Dogs on one hand need alot of attention while cats want attention when they want it. Dogs get used to people at the house to let them potty an feed them while cats r very self-dependent. At my house we had 5 cats an 2 dogs roaming around so i now that they could get along

Cats do not HATE dogs, and dogs do not HATE cats. Cats are small, and run from dogs, encouraging a dog's prey drive to give CHASE. Cats and dogs can be taught to tolerate each other through very careful training and discipline with the dog. Cats usually ignore dogs, so the main thing is to convince your dog that the cat isn't really as interesting as you or his squeeky toy. I have seen quiet a few cats and dogs that have grown up together that actually become close friends and companions. One of my puppies is very bonded to my 3 cats, and if they are separated the cats will meow for him to come back.

Sure, I have 2 dogs and they got along with the cats and even try to play. One of the cats loves the dogs, the other is usually on guard but he respects the dogs.

lol i got this e-mail a few weeks ago,but i had a pit bull that loved our cats he even babysat the kittens when mama went hunting, so funny to see 8 little kittens crawling all over a 100lb pit bull DOG DIARY 8:00 am - Dog food! My favorite thing! 9:30 am - A car ride! My favorite thing! 9:40 am - A walk in the park! My favorite thing! 10:30 am - Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing! 12:00 PM - Lunch! My favorite thing! 1:00 PM - Played in the yard! My favorite thing! 3:00 PM - Wagged my tail! My favorite thing! 5:00 PM - Milk bones! My favorite thing! 7:00 PM - Got to play ball! My favorite thing! 8:00 PM - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing! 11:00 PM - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing! CAT DIARY Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

Of course they can get along. It depends on the personalities of the individual animals. We have had several dogs and cats at the same time that got along. We also had a Siamese cat who chased away a German Shepherd when they didn't get along. Another Siamese cat we had, who had just given birth, allowed our new puppy to nurse right alongside her kittens.

They can! I have 3 dogs and 1 cat who just had kittens not so long ago. The cat loves sleaping with our dogs. especially when they are outside. But she only likes our dogs she doesn't like the neighbors dog. I think they only like each other if they get used to being around each other.
