I have a 5 year old son who is interested in modeling, he has won a pageant before and we recently took him to a model search and he was picked. however they asked for money to start advertising him-shouldn't it be free until they get paid for getting hom a job?? also, does anyone know of any good places to get started in child modeling or pageants??? I live in PA.

First of all I want to say ther is NOTHING wrong with putting a boy in pageants...How do you think they get some of the kids in mags and comercials.ANy way,My son has been in pageants and modeling for 2 years (hes 28 mo.)Won his first one,got a pass to go see a pro photographer(George papadakis in Chicago) who THEN had you pay money, for pics. But you send in those pictures to modeling agencies, they have you come to them if they find something they like youre son for.IF you get the gig (which they would have you come most likey if he wasnt a good pick in the first place). After you get the job you are paid, and the agencies get a percentage for their work/having to find some jobs suitable for youre child.Good Luck to you and youre son.

Those model searches that you see in the newspaper and on the radio are just scams. They have these huge "casting calls" and say they're going to pick certain people, but they really end up picking everyone... as long as you're willing to pay a ridiculous fee. Don't! It's just a scam and they won't get you anywhere in the business. Get some professional photos taken of your kid, and not like the Olan Mills type of photos but more relaxed shots. It should be cheaper too, b/c you can hire someone by the hour and own the photos, so you can make as many copies as you want, without having to order through the company.
Look around the web for sites that post casting calls. There are a few good ones out there that don't charge. Try starzcasting.com. Find some smaller gigs for your child first so he can build up his experience and resume. If you're in PA you should be able to find things here or there in Philadelphia, but NY is going to be your best market. I hope you're willing to travel for gigs!

It's just like writing, illustrating, or any agency-based field: if the agency thinks he has potential, they'll pay the starting expenses in return for a significant profit later. If they're not even willing to do that, they're just playing on your vanity toward him. In that case, try to find him a healthier hobby.

My daughter did this for awhile. We were aproached at a store. My advice would be to call the Agencies directly. You should never have to pay any money at all! If they believe in your son, they will pay him.(put that in a college fund by the way)

I live in PA also. I don't know what part of PA you live in but there is a place in Mechanicsburg. I am also interested in getting my daughter into something. Email me at Aimstir31@yahoo.com if you find anything out. Thank you!

If you're interested in having your child model...contract reputable modeling agencies yourself and interview them. Anyone who contacts you and then asks for money up front is likely not legit.

Why in the hell are you letting your son model for PAGENTS?!?! whats wrong with you?? If he likes to be on tv and stuff like that have him audition for a few commericals and tv shows. Or let him model for cataglogs (like clothes and toys). i would never put my son in a beauty pagent....its just wrong!!

You are right. You shouldn't be paying any money. That sounds like a scam to me.

I wouldn't let my son do that sort of thing. I wouldn't let my daughter do that sort of thing, but that's just me.
