Try. That's the only thing a person can ever do for anyone. If you try your best to do what you think is best for your child, then I believe that's all a person can ask for. People are bond to let others down and disappoint them, but as long as you try you can never feel guilty.

Teach them to be kind, forgiving, compassionate, but not weak. all things have value and others opinions while different from yours are also valid and unless there is some danger to you from them try and understand where that person comes from, and its OK to disagree.
To many people believe only their ideals and values are the only way. For a a much better explanation read the speech Ben Franklin wrote before the U.S. Constitution was signed.

I wrote this when I was pregnant with my first and live by it every day!
I Raise My Children With
1.Respect: Every child has the the right to respect. They are a real person with feelings.
2:Love & Affection: Every person needs to know that that they are loved. LOved all the time, no matter what happens or what they may do. Tell them and show them every day.
3. A Predictable Structured Environment: No one likes to have things just thrown at them. Children need to know what to expect. What to expect from their parents and what their parents expect from them.
Tough Discipline: If they know what's expected of them, they need to know what happens if they don't follow through. Never hit a child. Does your boss hit you when you're late?
Most importantly, have fun! There are so many things that require no money. Just Love and Time.

Feel free to copy this if you want!

If your child is a boy, the best thing you can do for them is to not having them circumcised and teach them how to keep it clean, and keep pounding it into his head, until he's a teenager and wants to start dating, then he'll most likely remember for himself.

Other than that teaching them to read as soon as possible. Start reading books to them as infants, books with bright colors and funny stories. Sing the ABCs as a lullaby with them. Give them books to "read" and then help them read them. Teach them how fun reading can be.

the main thing is loving them!

besides that there are quite a few things but personally, i must say, the best thing my parents have ever done for me is giving me my freedom and independance and teaching me not to exploit it.
my parents gave me a lot of freedom and independance as a teenager - they let me make my own mistakes and make my own decisions. but that also made me consult them in my decision making BECAUSE they weren't trying to make them for me. unlike most teenagers they never stopped me from going out, but that didn't mean that i went out everyday or even every week- when i did go out i was never given a curfew but i always made it a point to come home before 1am. as life passed in front of my eyes i saw how most of my friends were sneaking out to go to parties, hated their parents, did drugs, smoked and basically got wasted! thankfully my parents trusted me enough to know that if i ever were in trouble that i wud consult them.
i am forever grateful to them for being so open and tolerant with me. but most importantly, they taught me that i shouldn't exploit my freedom and the trust that they had in me.

I agree that giving a child a love of reading is one of the most important things you can do.

I also agree with the circumcision thing. Stop genital mutilation.

Spending time with my daughter where she gets my undivided attention. Time outside exploring nature, time at the mall smelling different perfumes and feeling different textures of clothing.
