Since you do not want to be obvious in front of an audience you can always say that the best time that you are available & free to take calls is after 9. I do not know if you realize this but besides the Verizon network (I have that one and it is after 9) almost all the other wireless phone companies have 'free after 5, 6 & 7 options' and so the 'call after 9' is not as obvious as you may think....since many have switched to those carriers due to the earlier options - a super idea....

Well, if it's a friend of yours and the "audience" is also, they'll probably all understand about the free-minutes thing and be grateful you brought it up.
If it is a non-social environment (or if you really don't want to do that in front of even friends), then just mention that you won't be available to receive calls until after 9--they don't need to know why.

Just tell them you are with friends and tell them You will call Them back. That way it just sounds like you are currently busy and then you can talk to them after 9.

Leave a cool voice msg that states that you are able to be reached after 9 pm.

you could have all your calls go to voice mail. and have a voice message telling them to call you back during that certain time because you are extremely busy

Just tell them to call you between such and such hour. Everyone understands when your trying to save on minutes. Its no big secret.
